Guide to the magical FLORIDA KEYS: the paradise along the "Overseas highway"

THE FLORIDA KEYS TRAVEL GUIDE - PLAN YOUR TRIP

When people think about Florida immediately say Miami. Miami is the main attraction, of course, but there is more. Among the most popular and visited places in the "Sunshine State" there is certainly Key West, the spearhead of the Keys islands, an archipelago of 1700 islands linked each other by the mythical "overseas highway" that divides the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico. 159 miles separates Key West, the last of the islands, from Miami, more than 200 km of a beauty with few equals in a Caribbean context, which inspired the talent of Ernerst Hemingway, who lived in Key West for a large part of his life. Well, do not be scared by the length of the  road you'll have to travel with your car:  after the initial pretty monotonous stretch, you will enter in another dimension. It's you, the road, the sea, and one by one all the islands When to go? Always, always and always. Summer temperatures often approaching 40 degrees, much more myths is winter time (average around 25). Can you have a bath into the sea even in winter time? The answer is yes, altough the water temperature won't be very high.

Well, it's true that the first part is the most charming, but in Key Largo you can't really miss the world third largest coral barrier reef located in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Snorkeling, diving or boat trips of varying duration (from 2 hours to 4 hours 30 and 30) are some of the plenty activities you can do. There are even plenty of wrecks: the most famous is the Christ of the Abyss.

You'll cross Islamorada, the island of fishermen and then Marathon. It's the heart of the Keys, where you will probably find the best beach of the entire Keys: Sombrero Beach. Not far from Sombrero Beach there are two other must-see attractions: the Dolphin Research Center where you can swim with dolphins and, if you like nature, Crane Point, a 25-hectare forest where hiking. We're getting to the heart of the Keys, surely the most charming area. The front door is the 7 mile bridge, a seven miles long bridge suspended in the water.

Just passed the 7miles bridge and reached the city of Big Pine Key, turn left towards the Bahia Honda State Park (admission $ 8). The place is, in our opinion, the most fascinating of the Keys, Key West of course is excluded.

In here runs what once was the old railway: look for it and walk a bit  until getting to a kind of dead-center.

The sea below you, on the other side the continuation of the same railway, destroyed by a hurricane in 1935. Within the State Park there are also two beaches. one of them with a splendid view on the railway and on the overseas highway.

"No name". Già, senza nome.

What's the last wild card before arriving in Key West? Well, not far from the protected National Key Deer Refuge (where you can admire the white-tailed deer) there is very, very weird pub-pizzeria, perhaps on the strangest in the world. We are still in Big Pine Key and make sure you have with you a good GPS because the pub you're looking for is called ... "No name". Yes, No Name Pub.

Come?

Once found it you can not miss the chance to leave a mark of your presence. How? Ask for a marker, take a dollar from your wallet, write your name or a thought on it and paste it on the wall.

Magico vero?

Key West is one of the ten places in the US where would be worth living. And we challenge anyone to say that is not true. Sun and sea all year round, the relaxed atmosphere classic of Keys islands, the key lime pie, coconut water and, why not, sipping a Martini while admiring one of the most beautiful sunsets on earth. It's magic, isn't it?

A walking path that will help you to touch some of the must see places in Key West)

Cuba is not far away. It is just 90 miles far from the "southernmost point" monument, the southernmost point of the entire United States. Let's start the adventure among the "things to see when you are in Key West" from here, from the queue that will inevitably have to do before taking a picture of  the most visited and photographed monument of the entire Keys islands.

We are on the corner of South Street and Whitehead street, the street that you are going to travel for less than one mile till getting to the Key West Lighthouse and Keeper's Quarter Museum, the first lighthouse of Key West (30 meters taller, a fee is required), from which you can admire the entire town. Just in front of the lighthouse there is the Ernest Hemingway's house, now a house-museum, open to visitors all year long from 9 am to 5 pm. Prices are: $ 13 for adults and 6 for children.

Walk along Whitehead till reaching the corner of Whitehead and Petronia St. You'll encounter the Green Parrot Bar, the oldest pub in the Keys (1890), the "first and last bars along the Us Route 1". But if you want an insight of Key West you must visit the cemetery not far from Duval Street. Why the cemetery? Well, because it's one of the most irreverent where you can find some of the most funny gravestone you've ever seen. An example: "If you are reading this, you desperately need a hobby".

Duval Street, the main street of Key West is finally waiting for you. Restaurants, pubs, shops: the nightlife in the city of roosters (yes, there's plenty of them around the streets) winds here, between Duval Street and Mallory Square. Sip a cup of tea, eat the world famous key lime pie and admire one of the most spectacular sunsets of the United States.

Just a tip. Don't go late, Mallory Square is always crowded at sunset.

Well, last but not least, don't forget to enjoy a good live music at Sloppy Joe's, Hemingway's favorite pub in Key West. Even our favorite.

What about the sea? You shouldn't white sands beaches and caribbean sea. People don't go to Keys islands for the sea. Guides recommends to visit the Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park (admission $ 7 per car or $ 2.50 per person) when visiting Key West.Location is nice, but beach and sea will disappoint you.

Everything changes if you wish to visit the Dry Tortugas National Park, located 115 km west of Key West in the middle of a small island. The Dry Tortugas is a former fortress surrounded by the famous "Caribbean Sea". A day trip and an important budget are required. You can reached the island by DryTortugas Ferry (departing from Kewy West at 8:00 am, arriving at Fort Jefferson at 11:15am - departing from Fort Jefferson at 3.00 pm and arriving in Key West at 5.15 pm). Prices, however, are quite prohibitive: $ 170 for adults, 125 for children.

CUMBRES & TOLTEC - The best scenic train runs in the "Land of Enchantment"

"Hidden away in a little-known corner of the southern Rocky Mountains
on the border of New Mexico and Colorado is a precious historic artifact of the American West that time forgot"

Just think about all the "Land of Enchantment" you'll find in New Mexico, the charm and elegance of the Colorado's Rocky Mountains and then ... well, in this amazing scenario, go back you time travel to 1900, to the times of the gold rush and silver mines.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, as often happens in the American west, take you with its steam railroad back in time, along a stretch that smells of west. More than 64 miles of beautiful nature on the border between New Mexico and Colorado, in a landscape which really is the "land of enchantment".

The magic of "Cumbres & Toltec" was born shortly after 1880, when the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad decided to extend the railway line up from Alamosa, Colorado to Durango, Colorado: the train was regularly taken by the miners who worked in the San Juan mountains, mainly around Durango and Silverton.

Il "land of Enchantment" appunto.

The name Cumbres & Toltec was born right here and comes from the Toltec Valley and the Cumbres Mountain. The passenger service was interrupted in 1951 and reopened in 1970 as a tourist attraction, and many americas immediately felt in love. A journey in New Mexico is a must for them. Why only them? Because even today, unfortunately, New Mexico is a partially unknown state for tourists coming from Europe but among those "not so famous american states", New Mexico is certainly the most fascinating. The "Land of Enchantment".

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad runs now between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado through the Cumbres Pass and the Toltec throat and today is the highest narrow-gauge steam railway in the United States. Only in the Andes or in the beautiful Scottish and Welsh landscapes you might find something like that.

Trains leave every morning from Chama (New Mexico) and Antonito (Colorado). But if you're here it's because you are probably visiting New Mexico (Santa Fe is just 60 miles far from Chama) instead of Colorado, whose main attractions are located in other areas of the state. Chama will therefore be your reference town, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants that we will never forget.

Throughout the season (in 2016 the dates are as follows: from May 28th to October 23rd) thousands of tourists rides the train. During our visit in 2013 we also met a lot of fans of trains: for them ride the Cumbres & Toltec at least once in a lifetime is a must, or perhaps something more. In Osier, midway, both trains stop and lunch is offered to visitors.

Osier, where trains to Chama and Antonio meet for the "lunch break")

The railroad crosses the Rio Grande and Carson National Forest and also encounter historic structures along the way, including two tunnels, bridges, houses and water towers. Colors are amazing especially in spring and fall season.

There are typically four full-length excursion options and you have just to personalize the journey: Antonito to Chama by bus,  return by train; Antonito to Chama by train, return by bus; Chama to Antonito by bus, return by train; Chama to Antonito by train, return by bus and two reduced-length excursion options: Antonito to Osier by train, return by train; Chama to Osier by train,  return by train. Full-length adult fare starts from $99, pne child may ride free with the purchase of a full-price adult ticket.

The reference website is www.cumbrestoltec.com (http://cumbrestoltec.com/schedule-fares/ for schedules and fares), but do not forget to visit www.cumbrestoltec.org, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to Historic Preservation, Restoration and Interpretation of this wonder called Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.

Things to see in Cody, Wyoming - The Buffalo Bill legend in the land of cowboys and rodeos

In an on the road along what is commonly called the "Real America", one of the stop you can't really miss is Cody, in the heart of the state of Wyoming, the land of cowboys and Indians, with that scent of "America as it once was" that makes this place really magic. Yellowstone National Park is less than 60 miles far (to the west ) that's why Cody has become over the years a genuine crossroads of the Real America.

Coming from South Dakota and just visited the beautiful Badlands, the majestic Mount Rushmore or the Devils Tower (it has become "famous" for the movie "Close Encounters of the third kind" directed by Steven Spielberg, 1977), Cody is a kind of the gateway to Yellowstone.

The first one who felt in love with this town was William Frederick Cody. Don't you now who William Frederick Cody was? Well, don't worry. The entire world know him as "Buffalo Bill", which essentially was the "architect" of the creation of the city that took his name directly from him. In here, almost everything is connected to one of the most significant figures in the history of the United States: for example the five museums that are located inside the Buffalo Bill Center of The West.

Cody shows its "west side" especially in summer, when tourists come from around the world. Well, if the representation of a shootout between outlaws that takes place every day at 6pm in front of the Irma Saloon is the most classic "trap for tourists" ..

.... it can not be said the same for the CODY NITE RODEO (ticket price: $ 20), the real main attraction of the city and definitely highly recommended in the list of "the things to do and see in Cody".

Every night at 8pm, from june the 1st to august the 31st, the lights come up at the STAMPEDE PARK and the best performers of the various specialties of the rodeo, coming from various parts of the United States, compete in a truly very "west" atmosphere . Yes, the "Brokeback Mountain" west, the movie that in the mid-2000s has brought on maps a state, Wyoming, too often "forgotten" despite its beauty. And Brokeback Mountain did it in an unconventional way, talking about the secret love between two cowboys...

Grasslands and green hills in the background, inside the stadium cowboys seem to speak to their horses before the performance. It's all very, very west, it's all very... "Codyans". The show isn't just an official tournament, but even the level is very high. The presentation "american style" and the national anthem precede an event which makes Cody "the world capital of Rodeo"

Even if you're not an expert or don't like this kind of sport, you'll be charmed by those cowboys who resist on a runaway horse, or even chase and capture the calf. Cowgirls obviously take part in the tournament and it's not surprising. After all Wyoming is not only known as the "Cowboy State", but also as the '' Equality State". The first US women who got the right to vote were precisely the inhabitants of Wyoming.

This is the United States of America and a little bit of madness and entertainment is ensured. How? In the end of the show, all the children are called in the field and...  become cowboys for a night. They'll try to catch the calf and take a flag. Needless to say, in most cases calf wins...

We left the Rodeo and Cody with two regrets. The first one was that we weren't 12 years old and be "cowboy and cowgirl for a night", the second one is very weird. After we realised that one of the bartender at the stadium was italian (just moved there from Bari), we really would have loved to ask him "What are you foing, in Cody, in the land of cowboys"?

Things to see in TOMBSTONE, Arizona. Where the old west never ends...

October the 26, 1881. Early afternoon. This is Tombstone, deep in southern Arizona, just 34 miles far from the Mexican border. The California Gold Rush is experiencing its zenith, the same is happening not far away from the "Golden State", in hot Tombstone where the population, thanks to the silver mines, has increased exponentially in the last two years: from 100 (1979, when Tombstone was founded) to 7000.

Anzi dell’old wild west.

Silver but also and above all the many liquor licenses, brothels, dance halls, gambling halls and the illegal market of the mexican cattle stolen  by the Cowboys band, have made Tombstone one of the main old wild west outposts.

It’s 2.30 pm:  behind the OK Corral it’s going to take place the most famous gunfight of the Old West. The brothers Wyatt Earp, Morgan Earp and Virgil Earp and Doc Holliday against Billy Claiborne, Frank McLaury, Tom McLaury, Ike and Billy Clanton Clanton. Thirty seconds and thirty shots: the two McLaury and Clanton die, a couple runs away, others are injured.

Despite few deaths, the OK Corral gunfight  is certainly the most famous among the many happened during the frontier days. It has even  inspired many western movies like "Darling Clementine" directed by John Ford or even “Tombstone” (1993) with Kurt Russell and Wyatt Earp (1994) with Kevin Costner.

We won’t focus on the reasons why the gunfight took place and the various legends that are circulating throughout Arizona on who were the "good guys" (most likely the Earps) and the "bad guys". We are going to talk about Tomsbstone , the city where time has stopped. In here it’s always 1881.

One hundred and thirty-four years later (2015) the main street of the town  is still basically the same. The OK Corral is still there and the famous gunfight is played every afternoon, there are historical places and especially that scent of west that, for west-lovers, will mean a trip back in time.

No, non è uno scherzo.

No, it's not a joke. Along Allen Street (for three blocks between the third and sixth street) you will encounter characters that wear clothing of the late nineteenth century.

You’ll be in the middle of a western town. Once in Allen Street, you will also find most of the best places to visit in Tombstone. From the Ok Corral, located not far from the third street corner, to the Bird Cage Theatre, the most visited place of the entire Tombstone. From 1881 to 1989 the Bird Cage operated as a brothel, saloon, theater and gambling room. This is the only original building of the old Tombstone:  inside the Bird Cage there is a museum with photos, old objects and  even the gaming tables where Doc Holliday, one of the most famous gunmen and gamblers of the entire west, used to perform.  Pay attention even also to the bullet holes, authentic, on the wall.

The bravest will become "gunsfighter for a day." Well, if that’s not enough, you should know that the Reverend celebrates western style weddings (clothing and location) in town.

Not far from downtown, along the highway 80, there is the Boothill Graveyard, the most classic cemetery of the old west. Who is buried there? It’s simple. Those who lost their lives in shootings, hangings or just assassinated. Only one of them, curiously, died of natural causes. The cause of death is written on every grave and, if you're wondering if the victims of the Ok Corral gunfight are there… well, the answer is “yes, they are”. After all, the history of the Old West has been written here, in Tombstone, Arizona.
