F di..Fiorentina, of course - I tre itinerari per scoprire Firenze a piedi (Day 1 - itinerary 1)

What do you do when you get a discount for a train ticket and you really want to eat a good "fiorentina" steak (a typical italian steak: you'll find the best one is in Tuscany and especially in Florence)? Easy... let's buy the ticket to Florence! That's what we've done for the St. Valentine's week-end: we left Milan on friday morning and reached the Santa Maria Novella Station in Florence in just one hour and forty minutes.

Just the time to leave our luggage in the hotel and we immediately hit the main roads of the city. The first stop is the Covered Central Market, a huge covered market. In the first floor there are stalls which sell fresh products: from meat to fish, from sweets to fruit.

At the top floor bar and restaurants offer the main tuscany specialties.

Come?

It's lunch time so we split a portion of pasta with boar meat and after that we stop in one of the famous old town stalls. Why? We are acting like locals and  taste another Florence's specialty: the lampredotto sandwich! Actually it's quite disgusting couldn't finish it. Its taste is maybe too much for us. Lampredotto is, in fact, one of the four stomach of the bovine.

Now we can definitely begin the trip with the first itinerary: we've in fact split the city into three parts...

The first one is in the historical city center, starting from Piazza del Duomo with its Bell Tower designed by Giotto.

Walking through the narrow streets of the city we get to the Home-Museum of Dante, where the famous poet lived years and years ago.

Keep walking we reach the famous Piazza Signoria: in this square you can admire Palazzo Vecchio (which is the town hall and also a museum) and just on the right even the "Loggia dei Lanzi", where some famous statues as the Perseo by Benvenuto Cellini are located. In Piazza della Signoria there is also the Nettuno's Fountain by Ammannati and the equestrian monument by Cosimo I del Giambologna.

Just few steps from palazzo vecchio there is the "Galleria degli Uffizi", the most famous museum of Florence. Well. you know how we are and can imagine that although is a rainy day we prefer to visit the city instead of staying in a musem. We then reach the Arno River from where we can see the beautiful Ponte Vecchio.

We cross the bridge that is full of jewelrys and reach the "Oltrarno" area, where  our itinerary number 2 begins...

F di..Fiorentina, of course - I tre itinerari per scoprire Firenze a piedi (Day 1 - itinerary 2)

We left you on the Ponte Vecchio, where the first itinerary ended. We cross it and immerse ourselves in the area called Oltrarno, located on the left bank of the Arno river. Despite being an integral part of the old town we immediately that it's a kind of truer Florence.

Unique monuments like the Pitti Palace, the Basilica of the Holy Spirit and the two Gardens (Boboli and Bardini) but also shops and restorers make Oltrarno a really lovely area. Our route number 2 starts from Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, which we decide to visit (for a fee).

(Palazzo Pitti)

Before going into the gardens, however we decide to make a short stop for a coffee, Well, we immediately notice that we have not had a great idea. Two coffee and a bottle of water cost 11 euros! If you're going to visit the gardens should avoided the cafeteria close to Palazzo Pitti. Boboli Gardens are really beautiful...

...and very huge. Because of the rain it's just us inside the garden. We get to the pottery musem where there is a wonderful view on Florence.

La pioggia da leggera diventa incessante. I pochi visitatori presenti scappano a gambe levate.

Rain doesn't stop us, This place is magic and quite, so we keep walking through the gardens and try to imagine how it could be during the spring time.

Once finished our tour inside the gardens we keep walking until getting to San Felice Plaza and then Santo Spirito Plaza, known for its bar and restaurants. After what happened on hour ago at Pitti Palace no more mistakes are allowed: just one more stop is allowed, for a macaron at rinaldini. And this time so that we are not wrong!

Promossa.

Just the time for a shower and we are ready to satisfy the desire of "Fiorentina" that has taken us here in Florence. We booked the restaurant 15 days ago.  We don't pretend to be the best guides for monuments and museums, but when it comes to food ... well, everything changes. The appointment is at the Antico Ristoro di Cambi for a "Fiorentina" steak ... obviously. 1.2 kg of Fiorentina. We can even see it before it will be cooked.

(All'Antico Ristoro di Cambi Restaurant - Via S. Onofrio 1R, Firenze)

All accompanied by a Chianti wine...

As a dessert another specialty: cantucci and vin Santo.

F di..Fiorentina, of course - I tre itinerari per scoprire Firenze a piedi (Day 2 - itinerary 3)

Second and last day in Florence. Probably it won't rain, anyway we prefer to begin very early the third and last itinerary: Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato are the highlights.

We cross Ponte Vecchio again  till reaching, as happened the day before, the Oltrarno area. But this time, instead of going straight to Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, we turn left and start a very long walk along Via Bardi, close to the Arno river, and then the Bardini museum with its gardens. We also find out that the tickets we've purchased the day before for the Boboli Gardens would also be valid for Bardini gardens, but unfortunately we left them at the hotel. We reach then Porta San Niccolò in Piazza Giuseppe Poggi: during the Middle Ages it was one of the gateways to the city.

To the right of Porta San Niccolò there is a long staircase: at the top of it ther's a reproduction of Michelangelo's David, and, behind it, a breathtaking view over the city of Florence. Probably the most fascinating of all.

Even if the weather is not that good, we're not alone. Many people have had the same idea...

We continue along Viale Galileo, leaving the balcony behind us, and till reaching the church of San Miniato.

Not far from the church there is also a shop run by monks, where natural homemade products for the care of the person are sold.

We are in the "far side" compared to the old town: it's time to come back. Before reaching Piazzale Michelangelo we turn left, a long staircase leads first to the Rose Garden (it's february and unfortunately they are not in bloom) and then to the old walls of Florence. Actually we don't cross them: on the left there is, in fact, a long uphill road that runs along them...

It is a sloping and long road, but finally we are in front of Porta San Giorgio, the oldest Florence gate, built in 1260.

It 'a fascinating district, one of those where it would be worth living. Following the downhill road we notice that we are just in front of Santa Felicita church and again Ponte Vecchio. It 's lunch time and we taste another specialty, the Tuscany, crushed, in the best place of the whole Florence, the "All'antico Vinaio". Needless to say, it is very famous, and at 11.45 am we are already in line...

Capocollo, rucola, crema tartufata e stracchino

The wait is actually rewarded by the quality and freshness of the products used. Capocollo, arugula, truffle cream and soft cheese.

(All'Antico Vinaio - Via dei Neri, 74/R, 50100 Firenze)

After lunch we go for another walk through the streets of the old city, the last one of the trip.  As it starts raining we come back to the hotel, a quick shower and then we take the train. Some friends in Empoli, a town 30 km far from Florence, are waiting for us...
