2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 4: Kilauea & Hanalei)

Don't let the weather forecast scares you, even if sometimes they're not so good. It's true that it often rains often in Kauai, but almost never for a long time during the day. These are small tropical storms that then offer some of the most beautiful rainbows in the world. Well, our day starts just like this, shortly after sunrise, with the incredible rainbow that surrounds us as we move a few miles from our hotel, heading to the Alekoko Fishpond viewpoint. That's one of the most beautiful fishpond of ancient Hawaii, located just above the Nawiliwili Harbor . The retaining walls of the fishpond, destined for mullet farm, measure 274 meters. Alekoko ( also called Menuhune Fish Pond)  got it’s name from the legend that a small race of people known as Menehune built these ponds 1,000 years ago. The ponds which create a dam across a portion of the Huleia River was used to trap fish to feed the ali’i ( Hawaiian royalty). Large stones were used to create walls 900 feet across and five feet high. Legend says the ponds were completed overnight. The area was designated as the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge in 1973 and now is a protected and beautiful home to many endemic water birds. The rocks are now covered in mangroves and moss.

We are heading north, for the second tour (120 dollars per person, lunch included - duration: 4 hours) of the trip. We are about to experience a situation you can only live in Kauai, the "Mountain Tubing".  What is "Mountain Tubing"? That's an amazing experience. Hop in one of our four-wheel-drive adventure vehicles and traverse former Lihue Plantation lands deep into Kauai’s pristine emerald green interior. Enjoy breathtaking vistas and spectacular scenery, while your guide shares information about our island. When you arrive at our launch site you’ll grab a tube, don a headlamp, and jump in the gently flowing waters. Witness Kauai’s spectacular, historical engineering feats as you float down the open canals, through several amazing tunnels and flumes engineered and hand dug circa 1870. Enjoy the wonder and magic of each tunnel, lit by headlamps.

(http://kauaibackcountry.com/tubing/)

The Kauai Backcountry Adventures (2-3131 Kuhio Hwy, Hanamaulu) organizes tours every day. You'll be taken into the ancient Lihue Sugar Plantation in Hanamaulu, now privately owned and accessible only through an organized tour. Unfortunately, purchasing photos taken straight by the guides is not very cheap ($ 20 each - we "stole" two of them from their website) but experience in this unspoiled emerald green nature will be one of the highlights of your trip to Kauai. (http://kauaibackcountry.com/tubing/)

The Mountain Tubing Adventure is perfect for all those age 5 and over. This ditch and tunnel system that once irrigated vast sugar crops runs through some of the most beautiful and remote land on the island. You'll encounter even five natural tunnels. Well, 120 dollars per person may be too expensive, but you already know that entertainment in Usa is not inexpensive.

Traveling along the Kuhio HWY (56), we encounter the most beautiful lighthouse in the entire Hawaii. The Kilauea Point Lighthouse, located within the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, The crowning jewel of the Kilauea Point Lighthouse is the Fresnel lens, a complex array of lens and prisms which focused the light into a powerful beam, reaching 22 miles at sea. Today, visitors can see this remarkable lens assembly on the tours conducted twice a week. The original light source was a kerosene lantern providing 250,000 candlepower, eventually replaced by a quartz iodine lamp putting out 2,500,000 candlepower. The white tower, 16 meters high, stands on a 65-meter cliff overlooking the entire nature reserve (Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge) Unfortunately today it's Sunday and the lighthouse is not open to the public. The Kilauea Lighthouse Visitor Center is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 am to 4 pm.

The Hanalei Bridge, the small bridge built in 1912 and later brought to Hawaii, is the gateway to the most remote (and fascinating) area of the island. Why is this area so beautiful? The tourist bus can not cross the bridge, and the whole area that leades to Napali Coast has remained wild, except for the three beautiful villages: Hanalei, the largest one, Haena and Wainiha. The last great resort, The St Regis Princeville Resort, is located just before the bridge, in Princeville. Princeville is definitely the most touristy city: you'll finde golf courses and beautiful houses. Anyway, we're in Princeville for another reason: we leave the car at the Makai Golf Course parking lot and walk for a good mile in a beautiful residential area. We're looking for the Queen's Bath, located in a corner out of the coast. This is one of the most controversial places on the island.

Queen's Bath Trail is a 0.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail that features a waterfall. The trail is rated as moderate and leads to amazing natural pools along volcanic cliffs. The swimming area is accessible via a short trail.  In small surfusually in summer the water in the pool is calm and makes a great place to chill

For the less brave as we are, there's a tide pool completely protected from the rocks little further ahead, where we can swim. We also notice a white shark in this amazing natural place (watch our video on youtube linked below), where the only risk is to slip on those slippery lava rocks.  The swimming area is accessible via a short trail. During the winter when wave activity is violent, it is considered dangerous. So, be careful! (http://great-hikes.com/blog/queens-bath-incidents/)

This time we cross the Hanalei Bridge, because our next goal is the town of Hanalei, one of the most fascinating of the island. This is a small village, located between green mountains and the ocean. The most famous attraction the Waioli Mission House for a step back into Kauai's history. Another famous place is "Ching Young Village", a shopping center opened by a couple of Chinese immigrants in 1896 and now run by descendants. Well, we can finally taste a shave ice, the mythical Hawaiian shave ice!

E enorme!

We could have taste it at Kong Lung, close to Princeville, which also appears in the movie "6 days and 7 nights" with Harrison Ford, but it's another small shop right in front of the small shopping center "Ching Young" which inspires us the most. It's name is"Shave Ice Paradise". We can finally realize why the Shave Ice here is a sort of religion. Because it's delicious. And it's also huge!

On the way back we stop in one of the finest beaches on this part of the island, Anini Beach, located not far from Queen's Bath. If you're a beach lover, those should be the best five beaches in the island. We already mentioned Poipu Beach (southshore) and Anini Beach, but don't forget to visit also Secret Beach, Hanalei Beach and Haena Beach Park.

2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 5: West Kauai & Waimea Canyon)

Its nickname is "the Grand Canyon of the Pacific". It reminds Arizona with its rounded mountains, cliffs and shades of earth colors and evokes the grand canyon even though is definitely smaller (about ten miles long and up to 3,600 feet deep). Well, today is the great day of Waimea Canyon State Park, another jewel of Kauai Island, home of wild goats, mouffons and wild boar, just off the ocean. Formed by erosion from the Waimea River, the canyon boasts a colorful array of red, brown and green hues which are complimented by waterfalls and frequent rainbow. Wonders that only Hawaii can offer. We are driving southwest of the island, along the Waimea Canyon Drive (then Kokee road), which at some point ends. It Suddenly ends. Why? Well, the Napali Coast begins right there!

Once in the town of Waimea,  we turn right, right along the Waimea Canyon Drive which runs along the mountains. It takes about twenty minutes to get to the Waimea Canyon State Park (no fees), where the are many view points and also the possibility to hike different trails. It is not easy to choose when and where to stop for a walk, so we start focusing only on some view point and few short trails. The first one we face is also the first one you'll run into, the Iliau Nature Loop, located between mile marker 8 and 9 (on the right). A short loop (0.2 miles) takes us or the first time close to the Canyon, although this isn't definitely the best view. A better one is, for example, located between mile marker 9 and 10 (lookout).

Those are territories which still live between the myth and the legend, which were born millions of years ago when a violent earthquake split in two the island, paving the way to the Waimea River. It started running into the canyon and it never stopped. Well, obviously there's always been the Napali Coast in the background. Isnt' this magic?

Just a couple of miles after the viewpoint, the Waimea Canyon State Park opens the door to another state park, the Kokee (no fees). Well, the name of the park is not the same, the road we are driving is not the same (Kokee Rd), but the beauty of the landscape is the same, more than 1762 hectares of forests. From here you can see the Napali coast, admire the canyon and penetrate into the tremendous humidity of Alakai's misty swamp. The KokeeIl Wood Hinaina Lookout is another good scenic spot (between mile marker 13 and 14). You can also hike the trail that leads the waterfall (2.7 miles). Anyway, we're heading to the end of the road, looking for the two most beautiful viewpoints of the whole canyon, the Kalalau Lookout, and then the Pu'u O Kila Lookout.

The Kokee Natural History Museumm located a couple of miles before the last view points, exhibits photographs, path maps, books, plant species, a wild boar trophy and a 3 kg iridescent trout. The Kalalau Lookout is the first impact with the Napali Coast, the wildest territory of the entire Hawaii. Many of the most famous movies has been filmed here, for example Jurassic Park.  The waterfall of the opening scene is located into the Napali Coast, but is only reachable by plane or elichopter.

The trail we are looking for begins at the Pu'u O Kila Lookout view point. The road ends here road and the only way to proceed is by walk till the Pihea Vista Junction. You can then decide to continue along the trail which leads to the Alakai Swamp Trail. Each  part of the trail will give you a different view on the Napali Coast.

Soltanto faticoso...

On the way back we can finally choose the best trail to hike: it's time to get into the Waimea State Park. Even locals confirm that the best two options are the Canyon trail (3.2 miles out and back) or the Kukui Trail (2.5 miles out and back). The most famous is certainly the first one, which is also the most crowded. So let's hike the second one. It's just us, a Canadian family, and no one else, while descending into the canyon. It's very hot and even the canadian guys confirm that getting down to the river is not worth the visit. "There is really little water down there" they say. The scenery is, however, gorgeous: this is how we wanna be rewarded!

Sarete all'interno del Polihale State Park, in un contesto naturale davvero incontaminato.

Leaving the Canyon there's another "must visit" place, but time flies as usual and we're very late according to our schedure. If you've plenty of time just come back to Waimea, turn right along the Kumualii hwy and go all the way down till reaching a dirt road in the middle of sugar plantations, the last bastion of civilization (Lower Saki Marina rd). This is the wildest beach of all Hawaii, located into the Polihale State Park, in a truly uncontaminated natural setting. Swimming is pretty dangerous right there because currents are very strong, but you will experience the feeling of being isolated in a wild place. Even if you're in a hurry like us Hanapepe you can't certainly miss the town of Hanapepe, not just one of Kauai's finest cities, but also Lilo's "home" in the cartoon Lilo and Stitch. The houses of its old town are almost all registered at the National and State Register of Historic Places, and the city is full of art galleries. We are here because we want to visit one of the swinging bridge, a typical Hawaiian bridges, in some cases the only way to reach the other side of the river. This is the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge, a very special bridge that crosses the Waimea River and leads to the farm located east of the river.

It's sunset and the only way end the day is chilling on the beach in the beach park located within the Hawaiian Salt Ponds. The Hanapepe Salt Pond area has been used since ancient times for the production of salt for food seasoning and preservation. Every summer, the families of this region gather to build their “pans” to prepare salt for the next year. The earthen pans impart a distinct red hue and flavor to the salt. Not far from the beach park you can also visit the "Russian Fort Elizabeth", built by russians in the early 19th century. Anyway, now it's time to enjoy the ocean...

(le saline - the salt pond)

(l'oceano - the ocean)

Staying in Hanapepe also for dinner means taste the hawaiian culture. The Paina Pono Cafe is the diner where we're going to experience the hawaiian cuisine. The owner welcomes us ... sleeping on the table: this is Hawaii and this is the aloha spirit! We don't understand very well what we've just ordered, but the two dishes are not bad at all...

2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 6: Nā Pali Coast)

When you visit Oahu Island, the one-in-a-lifetime trail is definitely the "Stairway to Heaven", the ascension to paradise. Well, how does Kauai, the most fascinating Hawaiian island, respond to the most famous "sister"? Just offering the paradise that we all know as Na Pali Coast: an endless expanse of green, remote and deep valleys, jagged caves and hidden waterfalls: it really seems to be in a world where man does not exist yet. We're heading just right there, to the very north of the island, where civilization disappears and nature takes the lead. There are no cities, there are no roads, there is just the beautiful nature, within the 6175 acres of the Napali Coast State Park, which extends for the most beautiful 26 km of the entire Hawaii. Many famous movies were filmed here, for example Jurassic Park, King Kong and others such as The Descendants and Soul Surfer. It's the last day on the island and this is really the best way to end the journey: yesterday we only tasted the Na Pali Coas while visiting the Kokee State Park and the Waimea Canyon on the south side of the island, now it's really time to explore it...

(l'intero Kalalau Trail e la deviazione alle falls - the entire Kalalau Trail and the detour to the falls)

You can visit the amazing Na Pali Coast in three different ways. They're all worth it. Option number one: by helicopter, where you will experience the same sensations experienced by the protagonists of Jurassic Park when they landed on the island. Option number two, on a boat tour: this would be the best way to admire the majesty of the entire coast. Option number three, maybe the best one: hiking the Kalalau Trail. Well, we are talking about one of the most famous (and dangerous) trails in the world. The Huffington Post named the hike "the most incredible" and "epic" trail in the United States, citing its impressive views of the Pacific Ocean, beaches, and valleys. The narrow trail, three major stream crossings that can rapidly rise when raining, and falling rock have been cited as reasons why the trail is one of the most dangerous in the world. In 2008, Backpacker Magazine listed it as one the "10 Most Dangerous Hikes" in the US. Our opinion is that the Kalalau Trail is one of the ten places in the world to visit at least once in life.

Now then, let's go through it. But let's go with order. Explore the Kalalau Trail means getting in touch with a nature so unspoilt that it looks almost unreal. The entire Na Pali Coast (Kalalau) Trail is a 19.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Hanalei  that features a waterfall and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers: some of them are even able to reach the last remote beach (Kalalau Beach) and come back in a single day. The sensations you will experience once you reach the pristine beach will be the same thatTom Hanks experienced in "Cast Away". It's just the beach, the ocean and behind you, the imposing green mountains of Na Pali Coast. If you want to hike the entire trail you'll need to get a special permit. Clicking on the link below you will find all the information you need to get it (https://kalalautrail.com/information/permits/). And do not forget to arrive early in the morning. At 8 am we struggled a lot to find a parking lot.

We did not hike the entire Kalalau Trail, not because we haven't been brave enough but simply because we would have needed another day to spend on the island of Kauai. Unfortunately we did not have enough time and couldn't renounce the splendid beauties we've visited in the first three days. We're just going to hike the first part of the trail (no permits required).

We walked the first two miles of the trail (out of 11), till the first beach, named Hanakapiai Beach. The trail is not very strenous, at least not as much as it would be the second part (the next 3 miles), where the trail climbs from sea level to 800 feet over 1 1/4 miles. However views are gorgeous even hiking only the first part of the trail, with the pacific ocean as a background of postcard landscapes. Even the beach, with an adjacent steam that flows into the sea, is definitely gorgeous. Some cats and roosters (you'll find many of them in Kauai) are attracted by so many hikers who stop at the beach. Hanakapiai Beach is definitely the most crowded area of the entire Kalalau Trail.

E noi? No, non ci arrendiamo così.

It's time to get into some action. This is Kauai and after a while you just need it. The bravest hikers continue along the last nine miles of the Kalalau Trail, but most of them (95%) just go back. What are we doing now? We definitely do not give up. The adventure continues. From Hanakapiai Beach you can come back, keep going or turn left, towards Hanakapiai Falls. It's a two miles trail (in the end of the day we hiked 8 miles) between bamboo stalk and streams. That's the action we were looking for!

The detour will take us into the heart of the Na Pali Coast. There are fewer and fewer visitors, the nature here is really impressive. These are two strenuous miles to the falls also because the trail is very muddy and slippery during the first mile. In some sections we even encounter some strong current streams. Anyway the falls and the views are amazing and you really couldn't ask for more, even if the end of the trail is too crowded. All the people are here!

It takes almost six hours to hike the 8 miles of the Kalalu Trail and Hanakiapi Falls Trail. We're driving "home" while we notice one of the many stands where you can buy a typical fresh Hawaiian coconut and even on this occasion, we are about to learn something. The old vendor says: "Do you want it younger or older?". While Ale is ready to answer "well, a toyboy would not be bad ..." he explains that "the meat of an old coconut, so mature, is tougher and its water is tasteless. The meat of a young coconut is a "jelly" from which you can also drink its water as it is sweeter and rich in nutrients. Go for the coconut jelly. Needless to say, we've never ate such a good coconut (in the video below you can also see the preparation).

The adventure in Kauai is ending. Anyway, there's one last thing to share with you. Until now we have taken you in touch with the amazing hawaiian nature, but as we have already said, don't forget about the food. It's delicious in Kauai. It's the last night on the island and we just want the best. This is the town of Kapaa and this is "Street Burger" (https://www.streetburgerkauai.com/the-menu): great quality Crafted beer and just the best burger of the entire trip. We really couldn't end the journey in a better way!

Stay Tuned!

Now that's really over. Well, while the Hawaiian wildlife seems to say goodbye, we're already thinking about the next day. We will return to the main land and then it will be "Northern California & Oregon". Stay tuned!

2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 7-8: Central Valley & Sequoia NP)

Leaving Hawaii is always a traumatic experience, but this time are going even worse. The usual kindness of the Hawaiian airline's staff is not enough to soften the blow, also because as soon as we land in Oakland, there will be 200 miles more (by car) in the middle of the night till Los Banos Santa Nella, in the heart of the Central Valley. At the airport security desk we notice at least 30-35 bananas: no, those are not for Ale "the banana lover". Importing or exporting fruit in Hawaii is not permitted, the same thing happens in California: in every state border (with Nevada, Oregon, and Arizona) you will find a surveillance area where an agent who is always friendly will aks you the same question: "Any fruit with you?". We have already learned the lesson and while approaching Hawaii or California,we never have any kind of fruit with us. The Motel 6 in Santa Nella Los Banos, where we're spending the night, is probably one of the worst three motels we have ever stayed during our american trips (never seen a similar amount of cockroaches in the room) but this is the best solution to get closer to the day 7 final destination, the Sequoia National Park, now just 130 miles far from where we are. The best way to forget about the passed night is an American breakfast, sorry, a danish breakfast. One of the few interesting things we will remember about this lost place in Central Valley is the Pea Soup Andersen's, a historic Danish setting restaurant.

Several Danish immigrants came to California during the early twentieth century and don't forget that there is also a Danish setting town, called Solvang, which is a must for tourists traveling through the "big sur". An "american-danish style" breakfast while admiring objects from northern Europe makes us forget, at least for a moment, to be in the United States of America.

The central valley, a huge spit of land which connects Sacramento to Bakersfield along the central lane of the state, is a kind of California very far away from all the tourist routes, almost forgotten by God, as well as desert areas bordering Nevada and Arizona. Tourists avoid it, as the Spaniards did too at the time of colonization "because of the summer heat and the desolation", and yet, if experienced in the right way, the Central Valley could be a special place. It's a huge part of the state (6 million hectares), and is the hub of California's agriculture, capable of billing $ 37 billion every year. Many cultures live in this area (mainly Mexican) and the colors this land gives in winter and in spring is something magical.

Obviously, all that glitters is not gold. We notice, in fact, that locals are showing banners and fighting with the government of California because of the lack of water throughout the valley, which causes serious damage. We will find out then the situation is quite dramatic in the entire state. Meanwhile, in the whole valley, they make more money in just one year with almonds, pistachios, raisins, strawberries etc than they have been earned since 1848 in all the gold mines of the state together. Well, this is a paradise for fruit lovers like us and stopping at the various farms forces us to spend there the entire morning! For those arriving from the north along the "99" connecting Sacramento to Bakersfield, two of the places which shouldn't be missed are definitely the Hilmar cheese company (3600 W Canal Dr, Turlock) where are available guided tours of the factory and the blue diamond growers store, which sells locally grown almonds (4800 Sisk Rd, Modesto, CA). Another famous one is Valley Pistachio Country Store, we stopped there and tasted amazing pistachios!

(Valley Pistachio Country Store, 20865 Avenue 20, Madera)

Anyway, we are here for the Sequoia National Park, one of the most beautiful national parks even if pictures don't show it. Coming from the south side of the park you'll see the "Generals Highway" slowly descending for about 20 miles: at the beginning the vegetation is very different from the one you'll find in the heart of the park, everything will change once you enter into the "Giant Forest". Huge trees (sequoia) appear in front of us and it gets almost impossible to see the sky. The bark of these imposing trees is soft despite being here for thousands of years.

The park is crossed from north to south by the Generals Highway, which allows to reach all the main places not to be missed within the Sequoia National Park. And for those who want more (or, unlike us, don't spend the entire morning visiting the Central Valley), there is another National Park north of Sequoia, the Kings Canyon, which definitely deserves a visit. Take the "180" or, if you are looking for an even more scenic road, take the 10 mile road. Kings Canyon is a kind of continuation of Sequoia National Park and, along its 50 km, some of the most significant stops will be Canyon View, located 1.5 km after Cedar Grove and the Roaring River Falls, a 5 minute walk from the parking lot.

However, we are focused on the Sequoia NP and, coming from the south, we immediately notice the "Tunnel Rock", a strange rock formation that forms a kind of bridge, and then one of the most beautiful areas of the entire park, Crescent Meadows. We turn right along Crescent Meadows Rd, a loop that leads to Crescent Meadow, which the naturalist John Muir defined in 1875 as "the most beautiful meadow in the Sierra".

It's raining and it becomes even more magic, especially when we approach Tunnel Log, a tunnel formed by a tree. One of the symbols of the entire park. Well, if the rain prevented us from admiring the meadow of Crescent Meadows, it gives us a "tunnel log" free of tourists. It's not crowded as usual, so we can go with our car under the tree several times, in the silence of the redwoods that surround one of the most beautiful stretches of Sequoia National Park.

Not far from Tunnel Log, in another "mini loop" within the Crescent Meadows road, there's Moro Rock. Its trail (0.4) is one of the most suggestive of the entire park and allows us to reach the summit of the granite barrage at 2050 meters above sea level. The stairs are more than 400, but the view that opens onto the wooded valley and onto the Great Western Divide, a spectacular horizon with jagged glaciers that exceed 4,000 meters in height, is breathtaking.

Once we get back to the Generals Highway, we really get into the giant sequoia. To get straight to the heart of the matter, there're two amazing hikes: the Big Trees Trailhead (1.3 miles) and especially the Congress Trail (2 miles/loop). The most majestic trees are here and there is one that stands out above the others, reachable by a 0.3 mile trail that shifts slightly from the nearby Congress Trail. His name is "General Sherman", so called by naturalist James Wolverton in 1879 in honor of William Tecumseh Sherman, a general of the American Secession War.

No, that's not a tree like any other. Other trees are taller or wider, but none has the combined weight and width of this leviathan. The General Sherman Tree measures 103/31-metres around, and soars 275 feet/84 metres into the blue Sierra sky—and it’s still growing. Every year it adds enough wood to make another 60-foot/18-metre-tall tree. Among the many records of this tree there is however no one related to seniority. Despite its 2200 years it is not the oldest tree in the world: for the moment the "general sherman" is just the biggest...

Sequoia National Park is not only home of the world's largest tree but also of the third in this special rankings. You will find it after a handful of miles, turning right along the "180", the road which leads  to Kings Canyon. The 0.3 trail will take you to the General Grant Tree, called "the only living memorial in memory of those who give life for freedom." For those who love caves, the Crystal Cave (50 minute tour, $ 16 entry-fee) will let you discover the underground world of Sequoia NP, among over 200 caves, some of which are more than 1.5 km long. Well, and for those who would like to go big, there is a chance to rent a Jurassic Park car and venture for the park and beyond. Do not ask us where and how you can rent it, but we swear we saw it!

Noi siamo al Fashion Fair Mall, o meglio all'esterno dello stesso. No niente Cheesecake Factory stavolta, siamo al Bj's Restaurant and Brewhouse: promossi a pieni voti sia i tacos di pesce dell'Ale che le ribs (stranamente "italian style") del Marco.

It is time for us to return to Central Valley and especially to Fresno, where we're going to spend the night. We would like to stop ad visit other stands to enjoy the delicious fruit, especially peaches and apricots, protagonists along the "Blossom Trail" (http://www.visitcalifornia.com/attraction/fresno-county-blossom-trail), but this is America and it's not easy to find a shop open after 6 pm. One of the most famous farms is the Simonian Farms (2629 S Clovis Ave, Fresno). In Fresno, however, if you are not interested in shopping (Fashion Fair Mall - 645 E Shaw Ave), one of the options is to spend the evening at Tower District (E Olive Ave & N Wishon Ave). We are at the Fashion Fair Mall, just outside it. Well, no Cheesecake Factory this time, this is Bj's Restaurant and Brewhouse: ale's tacos and Marco's ribs ("italian style") are delicious.
