The ultimate road trips in the UNITED STATES - Western National Parks

Too many people are fascinated by American Parks, by a wild and unspoiled nature visited every year by milion of tourists. Well, how can you organize a road trip in the American West? Which parks would you choose? And above all, how would you avoid the worse problem while doing an on the road, drive for many hours without being able to fully enjoy the beauty that US West can offer? The choices are hard to make, even if that's not a  "mission impossible". Assuming the usual two weeks needed by an "on the road" in the American West, we propose you two routes which, according to our past experiences, represent the best way to explore the "Stars and Stripes" National and State Parks. Obviously we're focusing on the parks and not on the awsome cities of the West like San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas. In this post we are going to explain the first route: according to us this is the the perfect trip, the "Las Vegas loop". You'll also see some pictures taken during our on the roads.

ITINERARIO N°1 - LOOP SU LAS VEGAS

DAY 1 - FLIGHT TO LAS VEGAS

E ricordatevi che "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas".

As soon as you land at McCarran International Airport the lights of the Las Vegas strip welcomes you: this is the Sin City. Do not immediatley leave Las Vegas, because this is not a city like any other. And remember that "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas."

(Las Vegas Strip)

DAY 2 - HOOVER DAM & RED ROCK CANYON NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA

Both attractions are located within a few miles from Las Vegas. The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is located 16 miles west of the main town of Nevada, and offers the first impact with the red rocks and the typical western canyons. Do not forget to purchase the National Park annual pass here (80 dollars), which will allow you to visit all the other sNational Park you have in your agenda. Just few mile west of the Red Rock Canyon there's the ghost town of Bonnie Springs. The Hoover Dam is a truly impressive dam . We are right on the border between the state of Nevada and Arizona, the Colorado River lies below you.

DAY 3 - DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Direzione nord ovest.

Northwest of Vegas. On your left the California border, on the right the Nevada desert. After driving for two hours and a half  you will finally get to the Death Valley National Park, but first a couple of must see stops. In Amargosa Valley stop along the Veterans Memorial Highway at the Area 51 Alien Center, a particular service station (the area 51 is accessible from Las Vegas in just two hours by car), and shortly after, at the ghost town of Rhyolite, very active at the time of the gold and silver rush. Spend the afternoon at the National Park, but beware of temperatures. You can easily spend the night into the park at Furnace Creek (there's a "cheaper" lodge not far from the more famous, beautiful and expensive "The Inn") or just outside at the Longstrett Inn & Casino in Amargosa Valley.

DAY 4  - VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK

This is probably the only challenging stage. There are, in fact, 284 miles that separate the Death Valley national park from the second national park you're going to visit, Zion. In the middle of the stage, you can not miss the Valley of Fire State Park, one of the most beautiful among all the American State Park. Here you can not show the annual pass of the National Park. The towns of Hurricane, La Verkin, St George, Washington and Springdale are perfect if you're going to spend the night close to Zion.

(Valley of Fire State Park)

DAY 5 - ZION NATIONAL PARK

We are now in Utah, the state of the Mormons. Zion is a special park. The Americans like it very much, but not the Europeans. To admire it properly you must drop on the shuttle provided by the park and hike many of the trails which runs in the "narrows". Half day in the park should be enough, especially because the next stop, Bryce Canyon National Park, is very close: just 70 miles far from Zion. The towns of Tropic, Hatch, Panguitch Cannonville and are perfect if you want to spend the night close to the Bryce Canyon.

 (Zion National Park)

DAY 6 - BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK

The Bryce Canyon National Park is simply gorgeous. It's pretty small, at least compared to the other parks, and it takes just an hour to drive along the only road that crosses it. There are obviously many trails which gives you the possibility to get as close as possible to the typical rocks of the Bryce Canyon. By mid-afternoon you will leave the park and drive along what is probably one of the top five between the US scenic Bways, the UT12 which then becomes  "24". Unparalleled views will accompany you along the almost 300 miles that separate the Bryce Canyon from Moab, the final destination of the day. One more day to spend in this area is the perfection: Capitol Reef National Park and Valley of Goblin State Park are just waiting fro you...  Moab offers several accommodation options depending on your budget.

(Bryce Canyon National Park)

DAY 7 - ARCHES NATIONAL PARK

Another must-see National Park isArches. Explore the huge arches, in particular the "delicate" (a "must" at sunset) but remember that in Moab there are several possible excursions.

(Arches National Park)

DAY 8 - CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK

The older brother of the Grand Canyon. Yes, because Canyonlands is a really huge canyon. Do not miss the Dead Horse Point State Park at sunset: you'll be rearded by stunned views. In this case you can not show the annual pass.

 (Dead Horse Point State Park)

(Canyonlands National Park)

DAY 9 - MONUMENT VALLEY

That's a special day, you're going to visit the beautiful Monument Valley, located just 150 miles south of Moab. To get there you will encounter the Goosenecks State Park, a kind of little brother of the Horseshoe Bend and some particular town. An example is Mexican Hat. The best steak of your life?At the Mexican Hat Lodge, of course. The Monument Valley is the park that best expresses the American West, at least in the collective imagination. Here, as for the Antelope Canyon, the annual pass is not valid: both parks are, in fact, managed by the Navajo Indians. If you would like to lodge into the park and enjoy unforgettable sunrises and sunsets consider "the view" or "Goulding's lodge".

DAY 10 - ANTELOPE CANYON & HORSESHOE BEND

Until about ten years ago Antelope Canyon was basically the best kept secret of the American West. Now everything has literally changed, and if you would like to visit in the summer, make sure to book in advance. Book by  January / February to be sure to get the best times: the tours that starts at 11 am, 12 am and 1 pm. Page, however, has two other specials places. One of the, totally free, is Horseshoe Bend, the other one is Lake Powell. Take a bath in its waters will be one of the best experiences of your trip.

 (Horseshoe Bend)

(Antelope Canyon - Upper)

DAY 11 - GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

The Grand Canyon National Park is 133 miles far from Page. On the way do not miss the Navajo Bridge and then just drive south-west to the America's most famous park. You can spend the night inside the park (Grand Canyon Village) or in the nearby town of Tusayan.

(Grand Canyon National Park)

DAY 12 - PETRIFIED FOREST NATIONAL PARK & SEDONA

Well, this is a kind of "wild card day". You are now in the heart of Arizona and the nature is really amazing. It's not easy to make a choise and you just have this day only. Leaving the Grand Canyon you can explore the Wupatki National Monument, with the remains of ancient civilizations and the adjacent Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument (a cinder cone crater), but the best choice should be the Petrified Forest National Park, 20 miles east of Flagstaff. Trunks of petrified wood, stone carvings and especially the painted desert: essentially two parks in one. You willr each Sedona in the the late afternoon and never want to leave this amazing town. You don't have to visit Sedona, you have to live in Sedona! A town surrounded by red rocks, where the quality of life and lodging are top notch.

DAY 13 - ROUTE 66 E MUCH MORE

This is the last stage, a kind of transfer to Las Vegas, which is waiting for you. Experience the thrill of travel a stretch of Route 66, the longest one. Please forget about the highway, otherwise you'll have to say goodbye to the magic of the "mother road". You will pass through Kingman and Seligman, the you'll climb mountains and cross the small town of Oatman, where donkeys will immediately become your friends... you'll finally stop at the Hackberry General Store before taking the highway that will take you to Las Vegas. The last jewel? Located 20 miles south of Vegas there's the Pioneer Saloon, the first saloon built in Nevada. Even Clark Galble stopped there!

DAY 14 - FLY HOME

It's time to come back to the McCarran International Airport where (and we're sure about that), you will plan the next american road trip!
