2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 16: Astoria, Ecola State Park & Cannon Beach)

Portland is known all over the world not only for craft beers and the Oregon Brewer Festival, which in July welcomes the best 72 craft beers in the country, but also and especially for roses. Its nickname is "the city of roses" and that's not a coincidence. There's a time of year, between the end of May and the beginning of June, where being "the city of roses" would be an understatement. In fact, there are concerts, music shows and the Grand Floral Parade, which crosses the city with its beautiful flowery wagons. Among the 5 places to visit in Portland if you are rose lovers there is surely Washington Park, the main park of the city. You can admire the colorful and fragrant International Rose Test Garden, which contains over 500 varieties of roses, planted regularly since 1971.

(downtown Portland)

The park can be explored by walk, by your own car, or aboard a free shuttle. As usual it's very late, so we're just content to admire the Pittock Mansion (3229 NW Pittock Dr), a French Renaissance-style château in the West Hills of Portland, a hill from which you can see the entire city.

The mansion was originally built in 1909 as a private home for London-born Oregonian publisher Henry Pittock and his wife, Georgiana. It is a 46-room estate built of Tenino Sandstone situated on 46 acres that is now owned by the city's Bureau of Parks and Recreation and open for touring. Modeled after Victorian and French Renaissance architecture, the forty-six room house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Wildwood Trail through Forest Park also crosses the mansions parking area, allowing hikers to arrive at Pittock Mansion on foot.

There is, however, a third thing for which Portland is known globally. Bill Bowerman (a coach) and Phil Knight (a student) put on maps the main city of Oregon in 1971, when they initially started a company which then turned into an authentic world famous: Nike. The headquarters are located in Beaverton, a suburb of Portland (south-west) and the name of the street where the campus is located is 1 one Bowerman Dr.. Bowerman was one of the founding members.

Semplice.Temono il più classico degli spionaggi.

The Nike empire's born here. This is the "Nike World Headquarters", a whole city within a city, a huge campus with offices, gyms, sports grounds and even a museum. The buildings on the Nike campus, we learned, are named for athletes that signed Nike endorsement contracts. Athlete's have been a huge part of brand building. From McEnroe to Jordan. We would like to try to visit the museum, but there's no hope. "There is only one way to visit it. You have to be a relative of someone who works here" is the diktat. The key reason is the fear of industrial espionage.

Never mind, just being into the "nike world" is still so fulfilling. Parkings also have the names of the most important sportsmen ... for those who love sports, this is a kind of paradise. We also notice a group of kids playing tennis with the coach: she is very kind and tells us that "they are all children of those who work here at the Nike World Headquarters. During summer Nike organizes small campuses for all those kids. May we say "lucky them"?

Time flies and got a long day ahead of us. It's time to drive along the "30" crossing farms and small town towards Astoria. That's deep northwest of the state, bordering Washington State.

Astoria is one of Oregon's most well-known cities, especially because one of the most famous and beloved 80s movies, "The Goonies", was shot right here. A pilgrimage to all the film's locations is a kind of must when visiting Astoria. We begin to explore the city overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River and the Youngs Bay just off the Pacific Ocean, from the Astoria Column.

Built 91 years ago in 1926, the concrete and steel structure is part of a 30-acre (12 ha) city park. The 125-foot (38 m)-tall column has a 164-step spiral staircase ascending to an observation deck at the top and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 1974. You'll enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the Columbia River. In the distance you can see the Pacific Ocean and, the Astoria Megler Bridge. It's s a steel cantilever through truss bridge in the northwest United States that spans the lower Columbia River, between Astoria, Oregon, and Point Ellice near Megler, Washington. Opened 51 years ago in 1966, it is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. Well, we're ready to cross it!

However, first of all we have a make a quick stop by another of Astoria's icons. A small boat became one of the most beloved food trucks in the entire Oregon: it's name is Bowpickers (1634 Duane St,). Are you ready to experience the best fish and chips in the United States? It's not our opinion, many newspaper have given them this honor.

There's a long line and we've all the time in the world to read all of them: Bowpickers has won the prestigious prize for three years in a row... and we can just confirm that it's delicious.

As soon as you cross the bridge, Washington State will embrace you. Along the Willapa Baythere is a very pretty little town, Long Beach, especially its downtown located along Pacific Avenue. The main attraction is the Marsh Free Museum, but we're here for something more...american!

(downtown Long Beach)

We're looking, in fact, for the "world's largest frying pan" (north side of the 5th St. SE just east of Hwy 103 / Pacific Ave).It was forged in 1941 and stands 14 feet tall, is 9 feet 6 inches wide, and despite its name and impressive size it is not the World's Largest, having been surpassed in subsequent years by other towns with more ambitious plans and pans. Only in one country in the world can these things amazing things can happen...

We also try to visit the "north head lighthouse", located in Ilwaco, Washington. It's an ancient lighthouse built in 1897 and from the 2012 part of the Cape Disappointment Park. It is not so easy to figure out how state parks work in the state of Washington (we still don't know how to pay the entrance fee) and, in addition, the lighthouse is also closed for renovation. That's why in the end we decide not to visit it.

On the way back to Astoria we approach for the first time the legendary "US - 101", Oregon's scenic coastal road that than will become  "Highway 1" when in California. About 400 kilometers of the most pristine beaches in the world. It often rains, but the natural beauty of Oregon Coast is unmatched.

Lewis and Clark's expedition ended here and if you love american history, don't miss the "Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Park". At the visitor center you could admire Fort Clatsop, a replica of the house built by the explorers during the winter of 1805. The statue commemorating the irgesture is located in Seaside, a few miles south of the park. There are so many trail (some of them very long) and we will hike some of  them while visiting the State Parks on the north of Oregon Coast.

The first one is Fort Stevens State Park (1675 Peter Iredale Rd, Hammond), just south of Astoria, between the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia River. The main attraction of the park is the Hammond Wreck of Peter Iredale, the highly photographed and scenic wreck of a boat just off the banks along the Pacific Coast. This part of the state park is free. If you would like to visit Fort Stevens, the second attraction, you'll have to pay 5 dollars. Fort Stevens was built near the end of the American Civil War, it was named for a slain Civil War general and former Washington Territory governor, Isaac Stevens. The fort was an active military reservation from 1863–1947 and it's now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The second one is probably the most fascinating and beloved by the oregonians, Ecola State Park ($ 5 per car). Ecola State Park leads to two scenic spots, the northernmost point is called Indian Point, where a short path leads to the beach.

The advice is to ask about the daily "low tide" schedule if you want to admire the beautiful oregonian "tide pools" full of molluscs and starfish. The southernmost stop is Ecola Point. The trail is very short and gives the first view on the beautiful coastline and especially Cannon Beach.

Cannon Beach, which is our next destination, is one of the finest coastal cities in the entire state. Its beach has become very famous and cinematic tourist destination in the 1980s because some of the most famous Goonies scenes have been filmed there. Also part of the movie Twilight has been filmed in Cannon Beach.

(Cannon Beach)

As soon as we reach the beach, the beautiful "Haystack Rock" appears in front of us. Haystack Rock is a 235-foot (72-meter) sea stack sometimes claimed locally to be the third-tallest such "intertidal" (meaning it can be reached by land) structure in the world, but there are nomonolithic rock is adjacent to the beach and accessible by foot at low tide. The Haystack Rock tide pools are home to many intertidal animals, including starfish, sea anemone, crabs, chitons, limpets, and sea slugs. The rock is also a nesting site for many sea birds, including terns and puffins.

It's so spiritual that even seems to protect the many locals that are chilling on the beach or having a bath into the ocean despite the cold of the coast. Even in summer. If you are struggling to find a free parking lot, head off the main streets and try to reach these two addresses: W Warren Way, Tolovana Park or E Gower Ave.

There would be another State Park to visit, Hug Point State Park, with the 1.2 mile trail leading to the beach and to a waterfall, but as usual it's too late and we must reach Rockaway Beach. The town is definitely quieter than Cannon Beach, but the Offshore Grill & Coffee House will be able to give you a delicious dinner.

2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 17: Oregon Coast Railriders, Tillamook Cheese Factory, Cascade Head, Devil's Punchbowl)

It's the time for some fun, at least for the first part of the day. We are not very far away from the end of the on the road and we've definitely spent much time in the wilderness, that means that it's time for a relaxing excursion. Where are we? In Bay City, along the Oregon Coast Highway ("101"), a few miles north of Tillamook. We're still driving towards California and ready to experience two unforgettable moments at close range: the first one is closely linked to a railroad which once was "home" of the former Southern Pacific Transportation Company. No, this is not Garibaldi, home of the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, where you can experience a vintage train along the Tillamook Bay (https://oregoncoastscenic.org/schedule/), but a few miles further south. We're going to stop at The Oregon Coast Railriders (5400 Hayes Oyster Drive, Bay City) where abandoned tracks and also special "bycicles" are waiting for us.

The two-hour excursion (http://ocrailriders.com/ - $ 22, open from may to early fall) include the  the unique experience of pedaling a four seated, pedal powered, rail road bicycle along an inactive portion of the Port of Tillamook Bay Rail Road. It's a 12 miles roundtrip.

Yes, we are about to ride along the railroad tracks, with the pacific ocean on our right the right and the usual gorgeous nature that only the Oregon coast can offer on the left. Even the weather is fine (a rarity along the Oregon Coast), which it means that we're ready for this adventure. We're in the front row, it's time to go to Tillamook!

The custom designed four wheeled railriders have four recumbent adjustable seats, and pedals that propel the unit at your speed. Young children in car seats are welcome. Out tip is to take a seat in the front row along with the guide: Philippe, our guide, has been amazing.

If you're a jerky beef lover, be sure not to miss the Tillamook Country Smoker (https://www.tcsjerky.com/), one of the most important jerky beef procuder in the United States, and if you're a also a cheese lover (like us), the paradise is called Tillamook Cheese Factory (4175 Highway 101 North, Tillamook).

The Tillamook Cheese Factory produces a significant amount of cheese used in the pacific northwest thanks to the experience gained there for more than 100 years, where the company has really written the history of cheese.

They received the last prize in 2010. Tillamook was voted the World's best medium cheddar cheese at the world championship cheese contest, adding to their growing list of almost 700 award for Tillamook dairy products. Cheddar that is the best shot of a company that has had the foresight to open its doors to the public, offering free factory tours and a truly "recreation area".

Squisiti.

A visit to the factory includes a tour of the various production areas and tastes of various types of cheese. When we visited it in August 2017, the visitor center was closed due to renovation and we could take a tour of the factory. Anyway, a temporary visitor center was open and we could learn the history of the company, buy many products and also taste all the cheese.

The best time to visit the factory is at lunchtime, to enjoy the fabulous grilled cheese and above all the ice cream, another jewel of the Tillamook Cheese Factory. For oregonians it is "the best ice cream of the pacific northwest". Well, and if you're not satisfied yet, a few miles further south, another company produces cheese (brie) and excellent wine: its name is Blue Heron French Cheese Company (2001 Blue Heron Rd, Tillamook).

Brevissimi sentieri portano all'abete Sitka più grande dell’Oregon e all’Octopus Tree.

- Cape Lookout State Park: vi troverete ad affrontare tre percorsi.

Thanks to the amazing wildlife of the "highway 101", we forget for a moment that it's very, very late. We're therefore forced to skip some of the "sacred places" of today's leg: the three "capes".

- Cape Meares: Oregon's lowest lighthouse (11 meters high) lies here. Short trails lead to the largest Sitka tree in Oregon and to the Octopus Tree. The first trail leads to the beach (2.1 miles), the other one (0.25 miles) to the tree. A little further south, a walkway will take you to the Cape Meares Lighthouse and to the Octopus Tree.

- Cape Lookout State Park: you will face three hikes. The first one (2.3 miles, North Trail) runs through the forest and will lead you to Cape Lookout, the second one (2.3 miles, Cape Trail) will take you into the rainforest and the third one (1.8 miles) to the beach.

- Cape Kiwanda State Park: A short trail (0.25) leads to the "Cape's best beach".

Refraining from visiting the "Three Capes" is linked to the fact that, just south, there is a place very popular with locals and little known by the few tourists who venture along the Oregon coast. Yet legend says that Cascade Head offers the best view of the Pacific Ocean. Well, as it always happens when talking about a non-tourist place, finding it is not easy at all. The gps will not help you and signs are completely absent. If you are coming from the north, turn right after passing the town of Neskowin, along the N3 Rocks Road, and drive all the way to the Knight County Park parking lot.

Cross the road and follow the signposts that will then indicate the path of the trail. It winds for the first part through nature and road surfaces. The trail is 4 miles long (elevation gain: 1200 feet) and crosses a forest and then ends in the Cascade Head Lower View Point, an immense flower meadow, that gives one of the most spectacular views of the entire Pacific NorthWest.

On one side the river, on the other side the Pacific Ocean. Waterfalls pour into it, that's why its name is Cascade Head. A truly mystical place, made up of meditation and contemplation. The oregonians were really right.

Along the descent to Newport, we cross cross the town of Depoe Bay. The small Oregon Coast community has little to offer, yet boasts a singularly primate. Its harbor is the "world smallest harbor". Yes, the smallest in the world.

(Depoe Bay and The World Smallest Harbor)

Siamo nel Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area (Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area, Otter Rock).

However, nature is far more fascinating when it comes to the Oregon coast. And one of the highlights of the day is definitely the Devils Punchbowl, a "tide pool" inside an impressive collapsed sea cave. The bowl is thought to have been created when two caves carved by the ocean collapsed and now is part of the Devils Punchbow State Natural Area (Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area, Otter Rock).

The Devils Punchbowl  is centered on a large bowl naturally carved in a rock headland which is partially open to the Pacific Ocean. Waves enter the bowl and often violently churn, swirl, and foam, creating a wonderful optical effect. When the tide is out, it is not uncommon to see some locals swin into the huge bowl.

Newport, even if it's Lincoln's county most important town and a reference point in oceanographic research (it is home to Oregon State University and the NOAA National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), doesn't impressed us much, unlike the area close to Devils Punchbowl. Right inside the Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area we found out a delightful winery, the "flying dutchman".

Oregon wines are booming and challenging California's Napa and Sonoma Valley. Even those of "Flying Dutchman" are very good. You can taste a pinot black 2014, a syrah 2009 and a cabernet sauvignon ( 2007, 2008 and 2009). For those who love white wines there's a pinot blanc devils punchbowl 2015 and a white riesling 2014. Well, tasting them with an amazing ocean view will make the experience even more fascinating ...

2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 18: Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Cape Perpetua Overlook, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Cape Arago State Park and much more)

It is said that the most beautiful image of the Oregon coast is the Yaquina Bay Bridge, also known as Newport Bridge, wrapped in the typical morning mist. One cannot disagree with the oregonians, they are always right. This is the last day in the state, or better yet the last portion of the day, because at the end of the day... it will be California and honestly, we're already missing the "Pacific Wonderland". It 's a weird day, made by fog and melancholy and the Yaquina Bay Bridge seems to be the perfect picture: that is one of the most recognizable architectural works of the whole Oregon.

It overlooks one of the busiest harbours on the coast and you'll get the best view of it from the Yaquina Bay State Natural Area. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse stands within this natural area: it's a small lighthouse built in 1871 shortly after the foundation of the city of Newport, on the north side of Yaquina Bay which at that time was the most important harbour between Puget Sound and San Francisco. It was active for only three years due to the establishment of the most famousYaquina Head Light in 1873, located 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Yaquina Bay. The two lighthouses have a similar name and should not be confused. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is not only more famous, it is also the largest lighthouse in Oregon. You will find it within the Yaquina Head Outstanding Area (admission fee: 7 dollars per car).

(Yaquina Bay Lighthouse)

Shortly after crossing the Newport Bridge you will see the Acquarium Village, a quirky arts shopping area just south of the Newport Bay Aquarium. Old fiberglass pirate statues and seaport roadside attraction-esque sea creatures decorate the outside of funky art studios resembling old ships (3101 SE Ferry Slip Rd, Newport). Once you enter the town of Yachacts, don't miss the very photogenic Yachats River Covered Bridge: it is not easy to find because it's lost in the woods along a dirt road, but if you punch this address into the GPS you should find this place (8End of North Fork Road, Yachats).

We are in the heart of the Siuslaw National Forest, whose main attraction is undoubtedly Cape Perpetua Overlook, the highest point on the coast. The West Shelter, the observation point created in 1933, stands at the top, but it's very very foggy and we can't really see anything. Captain Cook first discovered this fascinating site, a jewel among many of this stretch of coast. The part closest to the Cape Perpetua coast is the home of the Devil's Churn, with its violent waves which breaks on the rocks.

The beautiful Captain Cook Trail, a 0.5 mile moderately trafficked loop trail that leads to the other two flagships of the area, Spouting horn and Thor's Well.

(captain Cook trail)

Cos'è Thor's Well?

We had great expectations about Thor's Well: it's all "google fault" thanks to all the pictures we found about this mystical place on the Oregon coast. Unfortunately this is a bad day, it's raining day and  Thor's Well is going to a disappointment. What is Thor's Well? It is a unique natural depression where sea water constantly flows. Also known as the drainpipe of the Pacific, the well is actually a hole in the rock that only appears to drain water from the ocean. In reality the huge hole is likely only around 20 feet deep. Even if the well is not quite as magic as it seems, it still manages to produce amazing sights.

To be able to enjoy the show, however, high tide is necessary. It means you can see the water which constantly flow into the depression just as if there was a hole in the ocean. The wind then favors the formation of the waves which, while breaking on the rocks, creates a sort of geyser, allowing Thor's Well to attract tens of photographers every day. However, reaching it is not that easy, the rocks are very slippery and you'll need to be very careful.

(Thor's well trail)

Ci penserà google a venirvi in soccorso...

Local legend tells how Thor's Well is the gateway to a hidden underwater world that, however, we will never discover. It is raining and there's low tide. Google is definitely better...

(Thor's Well by "google)

Oregon is a magic natural wonderland and, altough we haven't bee able to admire Thor's Well
at its height, there is always something incredible and unexpected around the corner waiting for us. It happens again just driving the "101" for a few miles to the south. The Heceta Head State Scenic View Point (admission 5 dollars) has one of the most photographed lighthouses in the US, the Heceta Head Lighthouse. A short uphill traill trail leads first to the quaint bed and breakfast overlooking the ocean and then to the lighthouse.

The view, despite the fog, is incomparable, with the violent waters of the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, the Heceta beach and the small Cape Creek Bridge peeping through the mist.

Before entering Florence, several road signs will indicate that this is the home of sea lions. Visiting the Sea Lion Caves is probably the best way to admire them: they are located several hundred meters below Highway 101 and boast the record of "the largest sea caves in the world". We, however, prefer a more direct touch with nature and our patience will be repaid at the end of the day. Florence is instead the classic coastal town, with its downtown (along Bay street) overlooking the Siuslaw River. A good restaurant is Waterfront Depot restaurant (1252 Bay St), but it's only open from 4pm to 10pm. If you're looking for a good Italian style espresso (with ceramic mug), the place for you is Old Town Coffee Co (125 1 / 2 Nopal).

Anyway, Florence has ended up on the maps of American tourism because of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, probably the most famous 40 miles of the entire Oregon coast. You can find some of the largest sand dunes in the US which locals enjoy riding with the Dunes Buggies. The Oregon Dunes are a unique area of windswept sand that is the result of millions of years of wind and rain erosion on the Oregon Coast. These are the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. Some dunes tower up to 500 feet (150 m) above sea level, providing numerous recreational opportunities including off-road vehicle use, hiking, photography, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, and camping. The Carter Dunes Trail and Oregon Dunes Day Use provide disabled access for forest visitors.

The first stop we recommend is along the sand dunes road, but the best place to admire them is at mile marker 200.8, at the Oregon Dunes Overlook. We know that the best way to explore the Oregon Sand Dunes is on a all-terrain vehicle, but also the many viewpoints can give some spectacular views.

The dunes extend as far as Reedsport, where you can admire the lighthouse (Umpqua Lighthouse State Park) or, with a very quick detour, even some elk. Just enter the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, located three miles east of the city. Anyway we prefer tocontinue towards Coos Bay where unfortunately we are forced to skip two very interesting state parks because as usual we're very late. The first one is the Sunset Bay State Park, basically a beach enclosed in a bay. The landscape is very beautiful and legend says that you can enjoy one of the best sunsets on the Oregon Coast. The second one is the Shore Acres State Park, a botanical garden containing every single rose that has won the title of best rose of the year in the last decades. After all, are we in the state of roses or not?

Well, even if it's late we can't really miss the most beautiful of the three stake parks in this area, Cape Arago, an ocean viewpoint located just south of the Shore Acres. From the cliff at 46 meters above sea level of Cape Arago, there's a sort of huge window overlooking the sea where you can enjoy an ocean view with very few equals.

Sometimes whales resurfacing here, while along the nearby Simpson Reef and Shell Island, you would see (and hear) elephant seals, sea lions and seals. California sea lions are definitely noisy. Every summer they meet up at Cape Arago for more than three months and their "meetings" are very very noisy.

To be honest, we're hearing another noise. That of Oregon, which we're about to leave. Here we are, that earthly paradise called Oregon is about to greet us, but doesn't stop giving. The town of Bandon, one of the last bastions of the state, is charming not only thanks to its Old Town ...

... but also and above all for its beaches. The shape and number of stacks is very impressive: each of them could easily be a sculpture of a museum. Where we are? Into the Bandon Ocean State Wayside and along a trail (1 mile) that leads to the beach.

E' situato all'interno del Face Rock State Scenic View Point.

"Face Rock" is waiting for us. Face Rock is a large monolith that recalls a woman, whose presence has always been closely linked to the beliefs of the Native Americans. It is located within the Face Rock State Scenic View Point.

If you're traveling with kids don't miss the Prehistoric Garden, where dinosaurs are reproduced in their natural environment. If you continue south along the "101" you will enter the city of Gold Beach and then the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor. A mile after entering the protected area (mile marker 346) do not miss the natural bridge viewpoint: from this viewpoint you can take a picture of the arch of rock and the remains of a collapsed sea caves.

Altri possibili stop sono Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint, Thomas Creek Bridge Viewpoint (il ponte più grande dell’Oregon) ed Harris Beach State Park.

Other possible stops are Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint, Thomas Creek Bridge Viewpoint (Oregon's largest bridge) and Harris Beach State Park.

When you reach the town of Brookings it will mean that you're going to say goodbye to Oregon. It's time to come back to... California. A very famous place in Brookings is Azalea Park, a very beautiful and eventful park, especially in May and June. Brookings, by the way, was the only city in the American mainland that had been bombarded throughout american history. It was 1942 when a Japanese plane bombed the entire forest with the intention of burning it, but the mission failed. We're going to spend the night in Crescent City, the Redwoods National Park gate town and also one of the three less "fascinating" towns of the on the road. No, it's not because we've left our hearts in Oregon. Crescent City, California, is just an ugly town...
