2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 9: Yosemite NP & Mono Lake)

That's not only one of the american's favourite national parks, but also by tourists from all over the world. It is certainly among the most crowded parks, especially in summer, which makes it a bit less fascinating
if what you're needing is peace, quiet and nature. Today is the day of the Yosemite National Park, a classic "must see place" in an on the road in California: it offers spectacular waterfalls, giant trees, cliffs and rivers which attract more than three and a half million visitors every year. We are driving along the "41", leaving the Central Valley and heading to the National Park coming from the south side, the part we missed during our first trip to Yosemite in 2011. Yosemite Np is a classic stop during a trip to the West Coast and attracts many tourists coming from San Francisco or from the Death Valley. This is the reason why it's always very crowded...

The stretch of road from Fresno to Yosemite National Park is a succession of farms, and we can't really skip them. One of the best is Sumner Peck Ranch Winery and Fruit Stand. The colors of the farm inspire us.. and we were right! The owner and the store clerk remind us once again the reason why we love America and the Americans. They give us several brochures about Yosemite for free and offer us a glass of an exquisite pomegranate slushie. How are we supposed to not love them?

The first visitor center we encounter as soon as we enter the park is the Wawona Visitor Center. Unfortunately, the whole area of Mariposa Grove is closed for maintenance and the consequence is that we can not hike the first trail of the day: 2.2 miles within a giant sequoia forest. Never mind, the previous day we saw the most beautiful sequoia in the world ... In Wawona there is a chance to admire a covered bridge and above all, the free of charge Pioneer Yosemite History Center museum, but once you take the Glacier Road you finally get into the heart of Yosemite National Park.

Many tourists like us are planning to drive this road and, even though it is only 10 am, a ranger tells us that the only way to reach Glacier Point is through the free shuttle service provided by the park. There are several stops, but we decide to get off the bus at the Sentinel Dome stop. It's time to hike the first trail of the day!

(Sentinel Dome)

Two beautiful trails start here: the Taft Point and Fissures (2.2 miles) passes through a shady forest and then in the middle of the "Fissures", deep grants in the granite about 1 meter wide.  It's Glacier Point without the guardrails. The trail to Taft Point is just another walk in the woods, but you'll never forget Taft Point itself. You can walk right up to the cliff's edge and peer straight down, unencumbered by the stone walls that hem the visitors in at Glacier Point.  The sight on arrival is priceless as well as what you will get at the end of the Sentinel Dome Trail (3.5 km) which leads to the top of the Sentinel Dome. Hiking to the top of Sentinel Dome is by far Yosemite's easiest way to experience miles and miles of views in whatever direction you care to turn. You'll see down Yosemite Valley, the Yosemite falls and El Capitan, a 3,000 vertical feet of sheer rock granite.

Well, you'll get the best view on El Capitan once you reach the very last view points, whether you're on the Glacier Road driving your car, or hiking a trail.

(sentinel dome trail)

Washburn Point and above all, Glacier Point, despite the crowds of tourists, are a must for those visiting Yosemite National Park, with the valley, the monoliths, the falls all in one picture. The most photographed area of the park is, of course, this one.

It's time to leave Glacier Road and take Wawona Road again (which later becomes Southside Dr) and reach the most famous area of the park (and also the busiest), the Yosemite Valley, where you can find a visitor center and some hotel. The most famous one is certainly The Majestic Yosemite, where the former US President Obama stayed while visiting the park. The first impressive view point is Tunnel Point, but the main attraction of this part of the park is definitely Yosemite Falls. A short trail that starts right from the Visitor Center (lenght: 1.6 km, duration: 30 minutes) and leads to the falls. We are very lucky: peak runoff typically occurs in May or June, with some waterfalls (including Yosemite Falls) often only a trickle or completely dry by August. Why are we lucky? Because, even if it's august, the falls are full of water! There are also many tourists and it's not easy even to find a parking lot free. From this point of view, "God bless" Northern California and Oregon...

There should be another trail to hike, but it's too late. Its name is Cook's Meadow Loop, a 1.6 km loop trail which starts at the shuttle stops number 5 and 9, near Yosemite Valley visitor center. This loop will take you close to some magnificent point of view of Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Glacier Point and Sentinel Rock. Instead, we're on the top of the Tioga Pass (already visited in 2011), which is just as beautiful as the Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point: It rises up to 3031 meters and it is not unusual to find rain and snow even in August. It is the kingdom of beautiful lakes: it seems to be in Europe or in Canada. One of the possible stops you can make is at Olmsted Point, where a short trail will take you to the beautiful Tenaya Lake.

As soon as you get to the Tioga Pass, a long descent will take you to the town of Lee Vining, one of the main "Yosemite gate town". We turn right along Highway 395 and then right on the left, on the unpaved rush creek road. This is not a good idea: we would have continued on the 395 and then turn left (120 - Mono Lake Basin Road) and finally get to Mono Lake. The dirt road doesn't sotp us, it's time to visit one of the highlight of the day, the Mono Lake ($3 per person, free of charge if you get the national park annual pass).

Located in California's spectacular Eastern Sierra, Mono Lake is an oasis in the dry Great Basin and a vital habitat for millions of migratory and nesting birds. It's an alkaline lake with very high saline concentration. It was born more than 700,000 years ago (second oldest in America) and hit the headlines in the 60s when was partially drained to supply water to the south of the state of California. From that moment the tufa formations which was formed 13,000 years ago, appeared and made Mono Lake a unique lake. Many people still prefer visiting the ghost town of Bodie instead of Mono Lake while visiting Yosemite, but we recommend not to skip this beautiful place.

Nella copertina dell'album "wish you were here" dei Pink Floyd c'è proprio il Mono Lake. (http://www.monolake.org/visit/southtufa).

There are few places in California, and perhaps all over the world, which may lead you to believe that this is Mars. This is one of those. In this reserve in the high desert, on the eastern side of the high peaks of the Sierra, the ghostly tufa towers mark the border of an old lake born millions of years ago, the rocky remnant of an ancient inner sea. A curiosity: on the cover of the Pink Floyd's album "wish you were here" you can see the Mono Lake. Few tourists but also bad weather, which not allow us to admire the world famous Mono Lake sunset at the South Tufa. It is located on the south side of the lake, surely the most photogenic area because richer in Tufa, the rock formations that distinguish Mono Lake. (Http://www.monolake.org/visit/southtufa).

The final stage won't be Lee Vining, but Bridgeport, located twenty miles north. Bridgeport is the classic western gate town with just over 500 inhabitants and one major street, made up of motels, restaurants and boutiques. This shouldn't be one the best nights ever, but this is America and never say never. W're at Rhino Bar & Grill eating delicious chicken wings and learning how even the most insignificant evening may be special. A bunch of friends, two guys (one of the is a policeman in Reno, Nevada) "decides" that we're going to be part of their team tonight. This is, like, the best time we can ever remember us having: whiskey shot and lots of laughter. And even some bad words, strictly in Italian, that the guys wanted to learn. God bless America.

"I love this bar,
It's my kind of place.
Just walk in through the front door,
Puts a big smile on my face.
It ain't too far, come as you are.
Mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, I love this bar"

2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 10: Bodie Ghost Town, Genoa & Carson City)

No matter how much time you spend planning an on the road, there will be many surprises that force you to change the "schedule of the day", itinerary and places to visit. Eastern Sierra Nevada, the huge mountain range that divides California and Nevada and leads to Reno, the main city of northern Nevada, is a special place for a change of plan. You'll encounter the desert on the right, the mountain range on the left and many amazing places in the middle, more or less hidden, which make this stage as amazing as the previous two. No, this is not just a "transfer stage" between Northern California and Oregon, this is definitely much more!

We are going to travel along the California-Nevada boundary basically throughout the day till reaching Susanville, a tiny town not far from the highlight of the next day, the Lassen Volcanic National Park. anyway, first of all we have to talk about one of the main attractions of the entire area along with the majestic Lake Tahoe. To do this you need to make a detour just fifteen miles south of Bridgeport, along the "395". then turn left on  "California 270" and continue for 10 miles along another unpaved road that will catapult you back in time. No, this is not the  2000s, this is 1859 ...

E poi?

...when William (aka Waterman) Bodey discovered the gold near what is now called Bodie Bluff. The name of this small town became Bodie. William Bodie a few years later died abruptly, surprised by a snowstorm, but in the meanwhile the town was growing up. It started with about 20 miners and grew to an estimated 10,000 people by 1880 What happened next?

We are going to find out that, because there are so many things to see in Bodie. You'll need an entire morning to visit a very special place in the world, a town which was one of the crossroads of the old wild west one hundred years ago. There is something magical about just walking through the last stretches of the dusty road leading to the Bodie Historic State Park (summer timetables: 9 am-6 pm, entrance fee: 8 euros per person).

After the last bend of the unpaved road, you'll note the isolated cemetery on a hill dotted by sagebrush, southwest of the city, and the ruined remains of a lost and forgotten town that Americans call "ghost town". Welcome to Bodie!

Yet at the end of the nineteenth century, Bodie was everything except a ghost town. The city was a thriving mining community with about 10,000 inhabitants and had all the services and attractions of major cities, including two banks, a music band, railroads, many newspapers and even a prison. 65 saloon featured the main street and, of course, murder, shooting and assaults on diligence were on the agenda. There was also a Chinese neighborhood with more than hundreds of people and there was even a Taoist temple. Like the other mining towns, there was also a popular red light district, at the very far north of Bodie.

Once the gold runs out, Bodie experienced a downfall. Yet it maintained a permanent population for many years in the twentieth century, even after the fire that devastated most of its economic centers in 1932.  As time went on, however, citizens have slowly disappeared as the gold and, about half a century ago, the last residents moved and left Bodie, leaving the uninhabited buildings and at the mercy of the desert and the cold of the winter months.

Cosa visitare a Bodie? Sostanzialmente tutto. Good, by God, I’m going to Bodie”. La seconda versione è “Goodbye God, I’m going to Bodie". Già, esistono due versioni. Quale sarà quella vera?

What to Visit in Bodie? Basically everything. There is a whole city to explore, despite the various earthquakes that have seriously jeopardized some of the fragile buildings of the former mining town, within the Bodie Historical State Park. A guide, which can be purchased separately, explains every single building and just walking through its dusty streets will give you a lot of emotions. There is even a very particular legend that best describes what one hundred years ago was Bodie. It's a story about a little girl whose family was moving from San Francisco to Bodie; Depending on who tells it, she wrote in her diary either: “Good, by God, I’m going to Bodie”-or-“Goodbye God, I’m going to Bodie”. Which is the truth?

Stores, hotels and homes are carefully preserved: All looking exactly as they did then, when the last inhabitant left the town and Bodie became a ghost town. Cars, gas station and the lonely graveyard gives an image of life and death in this remote corner of the California High Desert that boasts many visitors every day. You will also notice the school, with the books on the benches, the motel and the mayor saloon. A journey through time with your mind is just inevitable ...

Not far from Bodie Ghost Town and the town of Bridgeport, there's  another very special place, called Travertine Hot Springs, a natural hot spring with an amazing view on Sierra Nevada mountains, a kind of paradise for Mono County inhabitants. There is no "entry fee", the hot spring is "natural" and anyone is allowed to get into the hot water (Jack Sawyer Rd., Bridgeport). If you have more time to spend in this area, Travertine Hot Springs could be the ice on the cake, as well as the beautiful Lake Tahoe which was part of our original schedule. Lake Tahoe, blue as a topaz and circled by majestic peaks, this High Sierra gem straddling the California-Nevada border is a bucket list essential. We should have reached the beautiful Emerald Bay with its State Park, but we did not calculate that in the summer weekends the lake is literally full of locals and tourist coming from the mayor cities of the west coast. Besides Lake Tahoe, with its blue bathing water, is a kind of paradise. We also planned a trail (a ranger's permission must be obtained), the eagle falls trail that gives beautiful views on the bay (Emerald Bay) and the Sierra Mountains, but it's definitely too late. The advice is to spend at least one night at Lake Tahoe to really enjoy the beauties of this area. And for those who like to relax in crystal clear waters, in the Zephyr Cove area you can also find many resorts and spend an amazing weekend.

(Sierra Nevada's wildlife)

We can not spend the night on the lake, this is the reason why we're now in a  special little town located just shortly after crossing the Nevada border. This is Genoa, the oldest settlement in Nevada. The Mormons get there first and called the town Mormon Station. We have to go back to 1861 when the Mormon pioneers arrived in this area near Lake Tahoe. For several years Mornon City was also the capital of the state. After many years it has been renamed Genoa, in honor of Christopher Columbus and the city of Genova, to testify that there's always a legacy between the United States and Italy.

Why is it Genoa and not Genova? We asked the gentle lady at a sort of "visitor center" located in a small corner. "Well, we are americans and can not pronounce Genova ... for this reason you are in Genoa (with the accent on the letter " o "), and not in Genova" (accent on the letter "e") . Genòa is better, definitely better.

Solo in America...

Genoa is one of the most beautiful town you will find in Nevada. It is small, very small (about 300 inhabitants), which makes it little more than a ghost town but is very lively. There are also some attractions such as the Mormon Station State Park Museum, the Genoa Courthouse Museum and some of the buildings that have written Nevada's history. The most beautiful one? Definitely Thirst Parlor, Nevada's oldest "thirst parlor". Well, you are not allowed to enter the saloon with your horse, it is still strictly forbidden! Only in America ...

(thirst parlor - Nevada)

This is a particular day. Forget about nature, it's time to explore some nice towns and cities along the Sierra Nevada. Not far from Genoa there's one of the most important cities in Nevada: no, we're not talking about Las Vegas and not even about Reno, but Carson City, Nevada's capital. During its history Carson City has been a crossroads for silver extraction (there's a museum in downtown) and is now a beautiful city made of bars, pretty houses and of course ... the State Capitol, the symbol of the whole city, completely built with sandstone, headquarters of the the Supreme Court and the state libraries.

Già, i divorzi.

The last stop before reaching Susanville is the city Reno. This is still Nevada and with a population of over 235,000, Reno is the largest city in Northern Nevada. It is located in the southern part of Washoe County, nestled on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in an area called the Truckee Meadows. Known as "The Biggest Little City in the World" Reno is famous for its hotels and casinos, as the birthplace of Harrah's Entertainment and because it can offer a fun-nature combination. There are two major reasons to come to Reno, gambling and divorces. Divorces? Yes, right! If gambling is a kind of "must" in Nevada, surprisingly Reno is also the american capital of divorces. Nevada, Reno in particular, became famous as the divorce capital in the 1940s and 1950s. It had a residency requirement of only six weeks, and the courts were quite accommodating in granting divorce decrees without a lot of acrimonious hearings. Las Vegas was a wide place in the road then, and Reno was where the night life was. However, we still prefer the tranquility of Susanville, California, where we're spending the night. In front of our room's door there are two deers... this is "our" America!

2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 11: Lassen Volcanic National Park & McArthur–Burney Falls Memorial State Park)

The town of Susanville, where our "on the road" resumes, is the "gate town" of one of the longest and most beautiful scenic byway across the United States. We are talking about the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, which runs for more than 500 miles through the Cascade Range mountains and is connected to the territory by one main theme: the volcanic activity of the whole area. It runs from Susanville, California, till Chemult, Oregon, crossing two National Parks and various natural beauties that will leave you breathless: for example the Burney Falls.  If you will, as we did, drive the entire 500 miles of the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, you will be driving on two different byways, the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway - Oregon and the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway - California.

(Volcanic Legacy Scenic Bways - California & Oregon maps)

The first part of the byway, coming from Susanville, is better known as Lassen Scenic Byway, due to the loop surrounding the Lassen Volcanic National Park, which you immediately encounter once leaving the town of Chester, on Lake Almanor, coming from the south east. The Lassen summit is one of the largest lava dome on the planet, created by the eruptions of the Mount Tehama between 1915 and 1917. It is currently a dormant volcano, but scientists state that volcanic areas around Lassen and Mount Shasta is most susceptible to a volcanic eruption of any volcano in the Cascades Range, a volcanic mountain range extending up to British Columbia.

Cosa vedere all'interno del Lassen Volcanic National Park?

What to see in the Lassen Volcanic National Park? There are two accessible areas in the park and Chester will always be the main gate town. Heading up north till reaching the Drakesbad Guest Ranch (you can spend the night in this beautiful lodge) you will be in the heart of the Lassen Volcanic National Park, but not in the most beautiful and famous area.

Drakesbad is located in an area well known as Warner Valley (access from Chester City) and still allows you to come into contact with hot sulfur fumes, hot mud pools, hot springs that distinguish a park also known as the "little Yellowstone". The two most beautiful trail are: the Devil's Kitchen and the Boiling Springs Lake, respectively 1.5 and 1 mile long.

If you do not have much tim, just drvie along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway and get to the most famous (and touristy) park of the entire park. The first impressive stop is Sulphur Works, rich in spectacular geothermal activities. The trail is very short and starts from the parking lot: in very few moments you will be into... Yellowstone, among the unmistakable smell of hydrogen sulphide and fumbling mugs. The largest one is 1.5 meters deep. It was an Austrian businessman who started managing sulfur extraction in 1865, but he left some years later when the demand for this raw material began to decrease sharply.

The Volcanic Legacy Byway is a succession of bends and view points that offer stunning views of the Lassen valleys. The first beautiful lake is Emerald Lake: it is the smallest, but thanks to the sunlight, gets beautiful colors and is a great reminder for those who want to relax in a perfect setting. This isn't a crowded National Park,  peace and tranquility reign here, even in august, and it is not difficult to meet some locals who will give you some tips about the park that you will not find on the guides, as happened to us.

A gentle lady explains that "Locals comes here very often. For example, I come here at least once a week and know each corner of this National Park ... By the way, there's another place you won't forget, it's located just about 1 mile north. You will immediatey forget that the Bumpass Hell trail is closed due to snow that has fallen down until a week ago despite being August. " Well, that's a bad news, we are basically here for the Bumpass Hell Trail and for a few minutes we completely ignore what the lady had just told us about the next stop.

Well, she was righ. As soon as we cross Lake Helen, just 1 km north of Emerald Lake, what appears in front of us is just breathtaking.  The snow is melting inside the lake and the crystal clear water seems to be almost unreal. This high altitude lake is often covered with a layer of snow and ice until the summer and this is probably the reason of its light blue color. Even in the driest seasons, the view is always sensational. No, it's not just the "park of the locals", but it's also the park of the "many surprises".

Well, if you look up there, you can see the top of the Lassen Peak, which is 3,187 meters high: it has no vegetation and stands out against a sky made by an intense blue as much as Lake Helen. Yet 100 years ago, with the volcano still active, violent erupts swept away the trees and devastated this territory. The explosions of the Lassen Peak began in May 1914, but the worst devastation took place only a year later, when impressive mud flows came down and hot clouds of volcanic gas were formed.

A few hundred meters after Lake Helen, the trail (more than a trail a kind of true climb!) that leads to the Lassen Peak begins. The path is initially misleading, because it looks very simple, between fir trees and pine trees with white bark, but then becomes very steeper as the trees disappear. A series of bends leads to the Lassen Peak, from which you can enjoy breathtaking views. Here, like at Bumpass Hell, forget about calm and quiet. These are the two Highlights of the park and are therefore very crowded, especially on summer weekends.

Although we could not visit it because of snow, the Bumpass Hell (3 miles trail) definitely deserves a paragraph for its beauty that reminds many of the trails in Yellowstone National Park. The name says everything: it's a hell: 6.5 hectares of hot springs and mournful fumaroles. One of the first pioneers, Kendall Vanhook Bumpass, was the unfortunate explorer who literally walked on these hydrothermal phenomena in the 1860s. He fell into a puddle of hot water and burned one leg. The walkways built at Bumpass Hell will allow you to walk safely: you will not end up like Mr. Bumpass.

To adjust the lack of the Bumpass Hell Trail, we're hiking a new one: that's not a very challenging trai, which leads to the Cold Boiling Lake. It's actually not very suggestive. it looks like a pond and the bubbles that you would have seen inside the lake are actually not so conspicuous.

The last stop is Manzanita Lake, at the north end of the park, one of the most photographed lakes in the park. There are many locals which come to spend holidays: they can go swimming, kayaking and do many other activities like hiking and camping. One the most beautiful trail is the 1.6 mile loop that surrounds the lake. In the north shore you will also find the best spot to photograph the cone of the Lassen Peak.

Down the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway you will find the charming Old Station with its 51 inhabitants.  This small community was once a stagecoach stop on the trail from Sacramento to Yreka in 1857. It was also a temporary military post while soldiers patrolled the stage road. Old Station also sits on an alternate route of the historic Nobles Immigrant Trail to California that was used by gold seekers around 1852. It now has mostly traveler services including 1 gas station, 3 general stores, a restaurant, and many campgrounds.

Little further north, once you reach the town of Burney, you'll face one of the finest waterfalls ever. Only the Hawaiians falls can compete with what you find into the McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, listed among the most beautiful falls in the entire West. Although this is a part of California that is not that touristy, do not think you will be alone into this park. Many people come here from all over the world.

You will find many tourists, as well as locals, who come to admire this beautiful 39-meter-high fall, which seems to come out from nowhere. The spectacularness of Burney Falls is due to the fact that it can be admired from above and then from several points of view within the 1.5 miles loop trail that will take you close to it.

In an area that looks like a group of ash cones and large plains, Burney Falls are one of California's finest surprises. It is no coincidence that the 26th President Teddy Roosevelt has called it the "eighth wonder of the world." And even though it may seem like a risky thesis, it's not out of touch with reality.

L'acqua è gelida e raramente supera i 5 gradi centigradi. No, non siamo alle Hawaii, stavolta niente bagno!

The main waterfalls originate at the top of the rocky wall, but then they also receive all the melted snow coming from the volcanic rocky surface. The water is freezing and rarely exceeds 5 Celsius degrees. No, this is not Hawaii, this time no bath!

We've already said that Northern California and also Oregon are two of the most beautiful states if you're looking for an amazing nature. Also because every corner can really be surprising you. Well, and today isn't over yet. We are in Dunsmuir, where we see a huge locomotive: looks like it wants to welcome us! Will this mean anything? Sure! During the steam locomotive railroad era, Dunsmuir was notable for being the site of an important Central Pacific (and later Southern Pacific) railroad yard, where extra steam locomotives were added to assist trains on the grade to the north.

Dunsmuir is not just nature (and mountains), but also trains. Well, we're going to spend the night into a locomotive at the "Railroad Park Resort", which since 1968 offers the chance to sleep in one of the many disused railroad cars of the Central Pacific Railroad. There are many different railroad cars and you can choose the one you like the most (http://www.rrpark.com/). It is not a luxurious resort, it looks like a motel, but it will allow you to live a very special and unusual experience. If you want, you can also dine in the restaurant that, of course, is located within another railroad car.

However, we preferred to dine in one of the most renowned restaurants in northern California. Although spartan and not expensive, Yak's is an amazing restaurant: the chicken wings are exquisite, as well as the chili and of course the sandwich. The bread is also sweet. It is made with the dough that is also used to prepare the cinnamon rolls, their famous dessert. Well, be ready to wait for at least 20 minutes for a table: Yak's is always crowded!
