USA - the deep south: Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Arkansas (day 4: Alpine - Big Bend National Park, Texas)

The 1000 km out of the way along the center/western lane of Texas had one major final goal, the visit of the most remote national park, the Big Bend National Park, located in the Big Bend territories near the border with Mexico. One wants to say that this is an old-time park and place, a land of outlaws that hid here when wanted by the Texas Rangers, but also and above land of frontier.

(the "170" - from Terlingua to Lajitas)

In this place, it is not the wall that divides United States and Mexico, as it happens in California, Arizona, New Mexico and in the westernmost part of Texas, but the most feared Rio Grande (Rio Bravo for the Mexicans). The territory is too rough and the Rio Grande is too insidious to push the "latinos" to try with the help of the famous "coyotes", to cross the border. The area north of Mexico (governed by drug cartels) is too dangerous to try to get close to the border, as Flaviano Bianchini beautifully described in the book Migrantes, in which the Italian writer pretends to be a migrant and travels thousands of kilometers on the " beast ", the freight train that sometimes can give to latinos... the American dream.

(sunrise at Big Bend National Park)

In poche righe abbiamo sostanzialmente raccontato cosa voglia dire (e cosa abbia voluto dire in passato) spingersi fino al Big Bend. Solo montagne. Desertiche.

In a few lines we basically told what it's like to go that far and reach the Big Bend area. The scenic road, which leads to the Big Bend National, Park is the number "118". It's just you and the road especially if  you wake up just before sunrise time (like us) with a view to get to the park at a very reasonable hour. There is no sign of civilization for almost 150 km, those that separate Alpine, the last pillars of civilization, with Terlingua, the ghost town that serves as gate town to Big Bend National Park. Only mountains. Desert mountains.

TERLINGUA, THE ULTIMATE BORDER TOWN
You will realize that the Big Bend National Park is not so far apart when some strange welcome signs welcome you to the town of Terlingua, once one of the most important border towns of the American west.

Here nothing is wrapped up in a bow to attract tourists, the city is still really anchored to the frontier days and along its dusty roads in the early morning there is the feeling that an outlaw may sneak out at any moment. Also because the doors of the historical Terlingua Jail are ... open!

Let's face it, probably the best kept secret of the whole Big Bend area is Terlingua, which is sorrounded by the splendid Chisos and Mule Ears mountains. Last but not least: on a clear afternoons you can even glimpse the first Mexican mountains (Santa Fe and Los Pinos), which are no more than 80 miles away.

Terlingua has been a mining town that had its height towards the end of 1800 thanks to the Chisos Mining Company (failed in 1943), but also boasts the incredible record of being the location where the first contest " Chili cook championship " took place (1967). On the first Saturday of November, over 10,000 "chiliheads" convene in Terlingua for two annual chili cookoffs.

Nowadays Terlingua is nothing but a ghost town, although some of the historic buildings are still well preserved. Such as the Starlight Theater, located in the dusty and tiny downtown. With its ruins, the cemetery, abandoned cars, Terlingua lets you breathe the air of the old frontier mining towns. You will also find artifacts, souvenirs and everything that has to do with the most incredible border town at the Terlingua Trading Company, located right next to the Starlight Theater, which is now a restaurant.

LAJITAS, DOVE IL SINDACO E' UNA... CAPRA
No, non abbiamo saputo resistere.

LAJITAS, WHERE THE MAYOR IS A ... GOAT
No, we could not be able to resist. Just before crossing the "gates" of the Big Bend National Park, once past Terlingua, we kept on driving along the "170" for about ten miles to the tiny town of Lajitas, located right along the Mexican border. No, we didn't mean to visit one of the most beautiful golf courses in the USA (especially its location) located into the Lajitas Golf Resort and Spa, but to greet the most curious mayor of American history. And not only.

Perchè curioso? Semplice.

Why the weirdest? That's easy. The mayor of Lajitas is a ... goat. Exactly, you got that right. Only in one place on earth funny stories like that can happen: its name is United States of America. Well, the curiosities don't end here. Clay Henry, the mayor of Lajitas, enjoys gatorade, while the first of his predecessors (who died in 1992) and his own son loved beer! The first Clay Henry is embalmed and exposed in the Starlight Theater Saloon in nearby Terlingua.

The "170", which is one of the most beautiful scenic roads not only of Texas, but of the entire United States, follows the curves of the Rio Grande river and leads to the Big Bend Ranch State Park, the little brother of the most famous Big Bend National Park. The name of the scenic byway is "El Camino del Rio" because it runs along the river for 79 km. Don't forget that after only 7.5 km you will find the "Contrabando Movie set", an abandoned movie set. It's not that cool, but you'll get the chance to admire a place where many movies have been set: for example "Dead Man's Walk" and "Streets of Laredo".

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, THE MAJESTIC ... DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND
In the heart of the Chihuahua desert lies the Big Bend National Park, by far the most beautiful Texan park. Over 3400 square kilometers of natural beauty with a very interesting fauna (mountain lions, coyotes and brown bears) that characterize this gem made of valleys and mountains, but also of inaccessible areas and very high temperatures in summer. It is no coincidence that Big Bend National Park is also called "The Devil's Playground" because of the summer temperatures.

HOW TO VISIT THE BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
Visiting the Big Bend National Park is very simple. The Park is structured in three macro regions: the Chisos Mountains are located in the heart of the park, the central area. In this main area you will also find the only accommodation in the park (the Chisos Mountain Lodge), the only restaurant and one of the two places where you can go camping. In the east side, the desert will take you to the border with Mexico, which you can cross only at scheduled times and days. You will find all the information at the Rio Grande Village Visitor Center, located not far from the second camping area and from the Border Patrol. The west side of the Big Bend National Parks offers Mesas and the very particular rock formations of the Big Bend National Park. It is the most remote area of the park. Basically there is all of Texas in one national park. There are three visitor centers in the park. The Chisos Basin Visitor Center is located in the main area, close to the lodge, the Panther Junction Visitor Center is located at the very beginning of the park coming from the "385", the Rio Grande Valley Visitor Center is located in the east side of the park, close to the Port of Entry. Rio Grande Village is open seasonally (november - april)

WHAT TO SEE IN THE BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
Unlike other National Parks, there are not many view points along the Gand Springs, the park's main road. In order to explore the beauties of the Big Bend, follow the Maxwell Scenic Drive, a scenic road that leads to the west section of the park, certainly the most scenic. There are several things to do and see in this particular area of the park. Do not miss the Soto Vista Overlook, shortly after the Mule Ears view Point and above all, Castolon. With its Harmonia Store, it is a panacea for a break. This area of the park is certainly one of the most significant as regards settlements. This area has been occupied since the early 1900s by peasants who built their farms right here: it then became a base for the military who defended the area from Mexican fugitives. The store sold food, clothes, equipment. It also served as the sheriff's office. The National Park Service bought La Harmonia in 1961 and now offers snacks, souvenirs and drinks. Castolon store is open november through april.

THE SANTA HELENA CANYON
If you are venturing into the west section of the park you will want to drive the  entire Maxwell Scenic Drive. That means reaching the Santa Helena Canyon Overlook, from which you can enjoy a first significant view of the canyon located in front of you. A few hundred meters later, a large parking lot means that the road ends here. Leave your car and venture along the Santa Helena Canyon Trail, the most beautiful trail that Big Bend National Park can offer.

(Santa Helena Canyon)

Santa Elena Canyon Trail is a 1.3 mile moderately trafficked round trip trail which starts at the very beginning of the canyon, where the Rio Grande runs.  The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. It is one of the most spectacular hikes, thanks to the wonderful views

It's good for all skill levels, but you'll have to cross a stream that flows into the Rio Grande (it can be crossed or not, depending on the water level and season) and climb the steps carved into the canyon wall.

(The Rio Grande)

If you hike the trail in the summer, of course, the water level will not be a problem (except for occasional flash flood, to keep always in mind), but do not forget about the high temperatures. It is recommended to hike the trail in the early morning or late afternoon.

(Santa Helena Canyon Trail)

Following the trail you will first climb almost to the top of the canyon and then descend to the river, surrounded by two huge walls that look like the Zion's narrows. Mexico is right on the other side of the Rio Grande and that's make this trail even more magical.

(Santa Helena Canyon - end of the trail)

THE EAST SIDE OF THE PARK - VIVA MEXICO! HOW TO CROSS THE BORDER
The Rio Grande Lookout view point (with its short and avoidable 0.3 km trail) confirms that we're entering the east side of the park. The two main trails of the area are the Boquillas Canyon Trail and the Hot Springs Trail. The Boquillas Canyon Trail is not very long, just 1.5 miles round trip. However you will have to climb, so it can be strenous with the heat, especially when you come back. The trail leads once again to the Rio Grande. The Hot Springs Trail is a 1.2 km trail that leads to the hot spring, whose temperature is 40 degrees (celsius). The hike starts near the visitor center. Anyway, if you've already hiked the Santa Helena Canyon Trail just like us, there's only one thing your mind right now: cross the border and get to Mexico. We've been very lucky: we chose the right day to cross the border. During summer it's open from friday to monday, and today it's... monday!

BOQUILLAS DEL CARMEN, EVERYTHING THAT THERE IS TO KNOW
To this day, September 2018, these are the days and times when it is possible to cross the border and get to Mexico from the Big Bend National Park. In summer the Port of Entry is open from Friday to Monday (from 9 am to 6 pm), during the winter is open from Wednesday to Sunday (from 8 am to 5 pm). You will find the Port of Entry turning left onto a dirt road before arriving at the Visitor Center. The military officer will explain some basic rules and then.... it's Mexico. Or better yet, you will look out on the Rio Grande. there are two ways to cross it: by walk (at your own risk), or by boat (5 dollars per person) made available by the Mexicans on the other side of the river. Once you cross the Rio Grande, which should be called ... Rio Bravo now, it's time of "big" choices again.

(Rio Grande crossing)

Only 1.5 km separate the port of entry from the first Mexican town, Boquillas del Carmen, but if you do not want to walk, there are three more options: a horseback ride, a mule ride, or a van ride.

Burro in spagnolo.

We chose the cheapest options (5 dollars against 8), but at the same time probably the most fascinating one: ride a mule. Burro in Spanish. At 1 pm, in the end of july, it can be a very long kilometer... so we had enough time to chose their name: taco and burrito.

In theory, once in Boquillas del Carmen, you should go through customs, but the military is having lunch in one of the two restaurants in town. He waves his hand, so we join him at the Jose Falcon's Restaurant (the other one is the Boquillas Restaurant). He greets us and does not ask us for any document, but he guarantees us that we're going to eat a fantastic guacamole. Let's say the best ever.

The story of Boquillas del Carmen has been decidedly troubled. Until 2002 it was essentially full of tourists who, like us, wanted to cross the border in peace: everything changed after the tragic events of September 2001. The Border was closed and Boquillas has become a sort of ghost town.

In 2013 the Border reopened and the small Mexican town came back to life. When you come back, just before leaving the Border Crossing, you will have to face the most difficult part of the excursion. The officer will invite you to take the phone and bring it closer to your ear. On the other side of the line there is another officer who asks you to show the passport in front of the camera and asks many other questions. Those are not the very simple ones you are used to when you land in your favourite American airport. We did not expect it and it was quite traumatic but, after all, also very funny. More information on how to cross the border at  the Big Bend National Park can be found at the following links: https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/visiting-boquillas.htm, http://boquillas.org/, https://visitbigbend.com/visit-boquillas/

THE CENTRAL AREA - THE CHISOS MOUNTAINS
The road rises vertiginously till reaching the only area where the mankind was able to settle in Big Bend National Park. It is the central area of the park, located on the middle of the Chisos Mountains, in a natural setting with few equals. The beautiful trail that you should not miss if you can spend more than a day in the park is the Lost Mine Trail (7.7 km), which really takes you into the heart of the Chisos Mountain.

If you're staying just one night, don't miss the Window View Trail, a 0.5 km paved trail located just next to the visitor center. The trail offers a beautiful view on the "window", that opening in the mountains which gives breathtaking views. Especially at sunset. Well, did you know that Big Bend is the best place in North America to admire the stars? The territory of Big Bend, in fact, is the one that is less affected by visual pollution. The starry sky is so vivid that you will hardly believe your eyes. And even if no pictures can ever do justice to this park, we assure you that you will never want to leave that magical place called Big Bend National Park. We know what you're wondering: the answer is "yes". The very long detour was certainly worthwhile!

USA - the deep south: Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Arkansas (day 5: Big Bend National Park - San Antonio, Texas)

If you do not know when to include the most classic long stage that allows you to "cut" Texas substantially in half once you visit the Big Bend National Park, this is definitely the moment. Forget the nature, the extravagance and the very special towns that characterized the day before: it's abruptly back to what is the Texas routine, made of endless nothing along the border once again marked by the Rio Grande.

(Fort Alamo, San Antonio)

450 infinite and boring miles, but that's the price to pay for living unforgettable moments like those of the previous day. South Texas is definitely a frontier land, places where, if nature does not come to the help you, it is necessary ... to fantasize. Imagine outlaws, sheriffs, shootings in those arid territories where the main pages of the old west were written. Well, along the US-90, which you'll join in Marathon (we recommend a refueling: the next town, Sanderson, is far behind, almost 60miles!) and leaveonce in Del Rio after more than 300 kilometers, you need a lot of fantasy...

Ingresso libero.

SANDERSON, THE CACTUS CAPITAL OF TEXAS
"Don't mess with Texas" it's just one of the many catchphrases of the Lone Star State. And we certainly do not want to be the first to do it, especially in Sanderson, where in addition to the usual arid territory and rattlesnakes ... there are also many cactus!. It is no coincidence that the town, a sort of small oasis around the Sanderson canyon, is also known as the Cactus Capital of Texas. Sanderson, which is always been dedicated to cattle breeding, made the headlines on 11 June 1965, when it was devastated by a flood that destroyed many houses and killed 24 people. The city's only attraction is the Terrell County Memorial Museum, located at 203 E. Mansfield St. It is open every weekday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1.00 pm to 3:00. Admission free.

ROY BEAN AND "THE LAW WEST OF THE PECOS"
In a day when there's no adventure and no natural beauties, you will have to find something interesting along the road. To be honest, if you love western history, there's a character in Langtry (one of the main cities of the old farwest) who deserves the attention. This is, in fact, the town where the eccentric Roy Bean (1825-1903) lived. Bean was a jurist, a Saloon's owner and much more. He proclaimed himself a justice of peace in the Val Verde County, earning the nickname "The law west of the Pecos".

(Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center - Langtry)

According to legend, he held court in his saloon along the Rio Grande on a desolate stretch of the Chihuahuan Desert of southwest Texas. He became the highest authority and judged all the crimes that occurred. He dealt mainly with abigeats, but there were no cases of murders. He was valued for his common sense, though he sometimes favored his friends. In the popular imagination, however, he is remembered as a violent, severe and incorruptible man because of the many movies about his figure, but he actually was a quiet and peaceful man. During his long career, he had only two men hanged.

(Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center - Langtry)

Roy Bean also appears in Scrooge Mcduck, where he is depicted as an old man fixated on hangings: in fact his recurring phrase is "... it's a crime punishable by hanging in Langtry, Texas, son!" Finally, he also inspired several movies including "The Westerner, "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" with Paul Newman who plays the role of the famous judge.

Roy Bean's saloon - The Jersey Lilly (Hwy90 - West Loop 25) now host the Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center and tells about his exploits. It also serves as a visitor center (admission free). A short walk through a beautiful garden will lead you to the places where the judge wrote part of the western history.

Shortly after leaving Langtry there's the Pecos Bridge. You will have to be very smart and notice a small detour on the left that leads to the view point on the bridge. The Pecos River flows beneath it. Not far from the bridge you can also visit the Seminole State Park, with petroglyphs linked to the ancient Native Americans. However, each trail can only be hiked with the ranger. Another interesting area is Governor's Landing, part of the Amistad National Recreation Area. This protected area, which surrounds the Amistad lake on the US-Mexico border, is renowned for water sports. The 137 km long lake is made by a dam built in 1969 at the confluence of the Pecos, Devils and Rio Grande rivers. Amistad, Spanish for "friendship," refers broadly to the close relationship and shared history between Ciudad Acuña and Del Rio. Most of the lake is surrounded by limestone canyons, some of which have caves with prehistoric pictograms.

VAL VERDE WINERY, THE OLDEST CELLAR IN TEXAS
Del Rio is not only the most important city in this area of Texas, but it's essentially split in two. On the Mexican side, in fact, there is the twin city of Ciudad Acuna. It is famous for counting the oldest Texas winery, the Val Verde Winery.

The winery was founded in 1883 when Frank Qualia, an Italian immigrant, who found Lenoir grapes flourishing in the Del Rio sun when he arrived.

(Val Verde Winery, Del Rio)

Nowadays, the winery includes over 10 wines of Italian origin including the award-winning Don Luis Tawny Port, which you can taste during a tour or a tasting (from monday to saturday)

The winery (100 Qualia Dr) is located in the most attractive part of the city. if you follow the "no outlet" road, you'll end up at the border with Mexico. In addition to the Rio Grande you will also see the wall and several Border Patrols.

UVALDE E CASTROVILLE: DAL MIELE... ALL'ALSAZIA

UVALDE AND CASTROVILLE: FROM HONEY ... TO ALSACE
Uvalde, which many of you know as the birthplace of the actor Matthew McConaughey is, according to the Texans (remember, "don't mess with Texas ...) the Honey Capital of the World for the production of huajillo (also called guajillo), a sweet, light-colored honey, dating back to the 1870s. In the city, the only remarkable building is the Janey Slaughter Briscoe Grand Opera House (1891), a historic mansion with a dragon at the top of the dome (104 W North St). On the other hand, Castroville is the "little Alsace of Texas." The first European settlers who migrated to this area were mostly Catholic farmers from Alsace, the famous region of France. Alsatian past reliving at the Steinbach House, built between 1618 and 1648 in Wahlbach and transferred to Castroville twenty years ago, in 1998. Museum hours: Monday (9 am to 2 pm), Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (9 am to 5 pm), Saturday (10 am to 3 pm).

Yes, we made it. Albeit very hard, we traveled more than 450 miles that separate the Big Bend National Park from that gem called San Antonio, without a doubt the most beautiful city of Texas. We already visited the city far and wide in 2013 (SAN ANTONIO), but we can't really resist such a beautiful jewell. Maybe it's the Latin charm, maybe it's the riverwalk that can revive the Texan evenings... the only thing we know it's that we really like San Antonio, Texas.

Entering the city from the north, do not miss the biggest cowboy boots in the world. They are located closed to a mall (7400 San Pedro Avenue).

(World Largest Boots, San Antonio)

If you we to happen by this mall, it's probably because you're following our "dinner tip". After "Big Lou", where they serve one of the biggest pizzas in the world (we talked about it in the post: "Texas and New Mexico" ), do not miss the spartan Chris Madrid's. We were told about this place by a lady from San Antonio who lives near us. A typical place where locals go...

Another daily nugget that we have not yet mentioned at all is the light show held every night at San Fernando Cathedral, in the heart of downtown, not far from the riverwalk (115 Main Plaza). At 9 pm, 9.30 pm and 10 pm the cathedral lights up, a ten minutes show that has always attracted locals and tourists.

(San Fernando Cathedral)

There are many things to do and see in San Antonio. You can easily spend two or three days in the shadow of Alamo. The most attentive have surely noticed that we've mentioned all the missions in the 2013 trip and even in this trip. This is the right time to talk about one of the icons of San Antonio: along the "mission trail" you'll experience a piece of history from Texas and the United States. We are about 6 km south of downtown, inside the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (admission free), which is a UNESCO World Heritage and Historical Park.

There are five missions within the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. They testify the Spanish colonial system that involved the Americas between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, when the Catholic religious orders were engaged in preaching and conversion of the natives along the Camino Real. The fifth and most famous mission, Alamo (located in downtown), is not part of the national park.

(Mission Espada, San Antonio)

From north to south, the missions you will find along the way are: Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada. The latter, founded in 1731, is also the first we visit (10040 Espada Rd).

(Mission Espada, San Antonio)

The second one is Mission San Juan (9101 Graf Rd), founded in 1731 by the Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order, on the eastern banks of the San Antonio River. The new settlement was named in honor of a theologian and a fifteenth-century warrior priest who resided in Abruzzo, a region of Italy, San Giovanni di Capestrano.

(Mission San Juan, San Antonio)

The third is Mission San Jose (6701 San Jose Dr), named in part for the Marquis of San Miguel de Aguayo, José de Azlor and Virto de Vera. The mission was founded on  February 23, 1720: the first buildings, made of straw and mud, were quickly replaced by large stone structures, including rooms, offices, dining room and pantry. A heavy exterior wall was built around the main part of the mission as well as the rooms for 350 Indians. It is the largest mission, its nickname is "queen of missions". The last, but not least, is Mission Conception (807 Mission Rd). The Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña was founded by the Franciscans in 1716 as the Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de los Hainais. Its ruins were declared a National Historic Landmark on April 15th 1970.
